A Pragmatic and Uplifting Prescription for What Ails the Workplace

Outstanding book that powerfully demonstrates why and how nice guys finish first. While many of the civility strategies discussed by Georgetown University business professor Christine Porath are basic (say please and thank you, don't interrupt, share credit, ask questions rather than barking orders), *most work groups and organizations don't practice them.* This is needed advice to be heeded, and I can't see any downside from implementing it. (Indeed, there's tremendous upside.)

Mastering Civility gives organizations a template for assessing the civility of a workplace and making improvements. Readers can also use the survey and websites in the back of the book for assessing themselves and their colleagues, and can begin to take corrective steps on this basis. Interestingly, the civility assessment questionnaire provided in the back of the book is sufficiently broad so as to identify the extremely serious problems of discrimination and harassment. If followed correctly, prioritized and integrated substantively into recruitment and employee assessment practices, a civility program could be a tool for helping rooting out harassment and discrimination-- provided that employees offer honest feedback to the organization and the organization responds proactively. Thus, implementing a meaningful civility program could do more than quell rudeness, it could also reduce liability risk for harassment and discrimination suits.

The self-care recommendations for re-energizing the victims of incivility are on point, and give a valuable template for restoring health and vitality.

Although a civility program can be used as a tool against serious workplace abuses, the one area not addressed explicitly in Mastering Civility is the problem of *deliberate* harassment or discrimination against a worker; about a third of U.S. workers-- a startlingly high number-- report that they have observed or been the victim of such conduct. (Mastering Civility operates on the premise that most incivility is inadvertent, not malicious.) Those experiencing deliberate harassment or discrimination should read Mobbed, by Janice Harper, which offers a sociological discussion of the roots of the phenomenon and a step-by-step guide for dealing with it effectively. (Harper was herself harassed.)

All told, however, Mastering Civility addresses much of what is wrong in American workplaces in an effective and engaging manner. The faster that Professor Porath's program is implemented, the faster we'll all breathe a sigh of relief. Mastering Civility is pragmatic and uplifting, and I recommend it highly.

if you ever wish for better times, in which people are both more decent toward one another and more effective in their work, check out this book. Want some data to show that your concerns are widespread and legitimate-- and more importantly, in what specific ways, with implications for what you can do about it? Check out this book.
I study organizational behavior, specifically what it means to be proactive at work, including its risks and generally positive impacts. Only through proaction-- as opposed to mindless daily routines and business as usual-- do people solve problems and seize opportunities.
With all the problems and demands and constraints we have to deal with, I urge students and managers to pick just one unaddressed issue and decide to take action on it. It would be terrific if more people chose the issues discussed by this author: to reduce incivility and increase civility.
This is decidely not touchy-feel fluff. The organizational and human costs of incivility are well documented, financially as well as psychologically and physically.
Interested in research and data with useful info about costs and benefits? Or just hoping for ideas about what to do as a manager, or as a target of incivility, or as perhaps a perpetrator? This is your source.

Mastering Civility is the Key to Productivity? Indeed it is.

Dr. Porath's well documented plea for work place civility brings back an unspoken truism to American society - we are more productive and work more efficiently when we work in and create environments that allow us to focus on what we are doing rather than how we are being treated by supervisors, peers, and sometimes subordinates. Her efforts are clearly directed toward the moving business environments to a better, more enlightened place. The latter chapters are somewhat more declarative and prescriptive and veer a little too much in the direction of business school cant, but the overall impact of the book is to serve as a welcome and powerful reminder that working well together comes not at the expense of productivity but as a natural and predictable prerequisite.
