- This book was amazing
- Skillpipe Official Courseware was pretty good
- Various Microsoft Press books for Server 2012 infrastructure 70-410 through 70-414
Mastering Hyper-V 2012 R2 with System Center actually explains some of the priorities of the exam. I thought the book was light on some issues involving System Center, but definitely better than all of the other resources.
John Savill does some pretty intense work the 70-412 course on Udemy (VIDEO)
John Savill has a very good video summary on the history of Hyper-V somewhere online (VIDEO)
This guy writes great books.
The explanation of Hyper-V's networking was particularly useful.
In spite of the title that claims "Mastering" you will not get enough step-by-step instructions to master anything. A more appropriate title should be "Feature overview and concepts of Virtualization associated with Hyper-V and System Center". But that would not sell as many books.
Where there are indications that install, management, or configuration "steps" are available, often, there is a link to some msdn blog site with the "real" instructions.
If you want a overview, fine, this is the book. One of the few that even cover this topic.
If you want to set up your own Hyper-V SCVMM lab, look elsewhere. Some online guides are OK. They are not perfect though.
What people want is a good, step-by-step guide in how to set this stuff up. And it should be easy enough to do but I have found no existing text that wants to attempt it well. A couple of "Cookbook" titles claim to do so but poor writing and editing make these other texts marginally worth purchasing.
This book is neither one thing or another... if you are looking for a book to guide you through ...
1. Planning ...
2. Setup considerations ...
3. A few installation scenarios ...
4. General management... maintenance ... patching ...
5. Trouble shooting ...
This book isn't it! You will find information about each of these aspects throughout the book, but not much that will really help you execute.
That said Chapter 3 on Virtual Networking is pretty solid ...
This is a shame as John Savill's online work is excellent and well structure ... this book however, needs editing so it can paint a cohesive picture.
