About the Author
His mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera in 1968 at the young age of 10 years and awakened a lifelong interest in capturing slices of time. Living in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains--near Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway--has given him a real concern for the natural environment and a deep interest in nature photography. You'll often find Darrell standing behind a tripod in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.
Since about 2000 Darrell has been an active blogger and article writer on photographic subjects. In 2008 his first photography book was published and, since then, he has authored over a dozen books on the technical side of photography, with a special interest in helping new photographers fully understand their complex cameras so they can use them for more effective and enjoyable photography.

To get the value from this camera one must learn how to configure it for easy access to its capabilities without using the touch screen! I am a pretty advanced camera user ( highly skilled but not professional) and can usually pick up a camera and figure out most of the basic stuff without much challenge. Same for this camera, however to use the camera for my intent requires accessing the advanced features, configuring buttons and levers, all without using the touch screen. Thanks to this book I've shortened my learning curve and then some. This book has exceeded my expectations! One other note - rather than re-state the things that ARE in the manual, this book (e version) provides links to the appropriate tables and content
Thank you to Darrell for such a comprehensive and well organized book.
That said, this is a "helicopter" book. You skim over it and then drop into it and get information you need or want about a particular item. The format is a bit confusing, sometimes you have to jump from one section to another (at the author's direction) to get the full description of how some features operate, but it's there.
If you are serious about photography, have some time to "play" with your camera and to practice the procedures he gives you, multiple times so that they sink into your brain (for example, how the EM-1 stores a custom white balance), then you will find this book will advance your skills significantly.
Mr Young has produced a well-organized, well written manual for the EM-1.
My only complaint is that I have had the camera for almost a year before this book was available. Even after working with the camera for a year I still found things I was not aware of and sound recommendations I had not thought of.

You won't want to read this cover to cover. There are some sections that won't be relevant - I, for example, skip everything to do with shooting movies. Each section looks at particular features and settings in detail and concludes with the author's own view on the settings that he would use. That's a particularly useful feature - you can get a most practical or ideal setup and then explore variations later.
Young uses a very simple still life of Lego and batteries to illustrate the features no effects, so it's to replicate it you wanted to do some bench experiments yourself.
Given that the camera is very complex, it follows that the book is very detailed. The author recommends that you have your camera with you when looking at sections in the book. It's unlikely that you could read it and remember everything. At times the book can seem dry and repetitive, but this isn't meant to be a bedtime read, but a detailed and very well presented technical manual.
If you have an EM-1, this book should be close by
The Olympus E-M1 is an incredible camera, but also very complicated because of the huge number of things it can do and the layers of menus - I've been a Canon shooter for years so not a newcomer to photography but found this book an essential addition to my library.
It is hard to imagine a more complete and beneficial guide to any camera. Well done and thankyou Darrell.
Thoroughly recommended, even if, like me, you have already bought a manual for the camera.
The Olympus OMD-EM1 is quite a complex camera and the product info (downloadable) is logical but doesn't describe when and where you would use each scenario/setting. This book reveals it all. I don't like reading product manuals but I read this from cover to cover, following the snap shots and now fully understand how to get the best from this camera.
Only drawback - my version covers firmware to v.3 and there has been another one or two changes since.
I love this camera but I think that's only because I bought this book
