A solid introduction to the capabilities of VMM

VMM is an additional management layer on top of Hyper-V (or other) virtual machine managers. Its purpose in life is to make the management of multitudes of VM images across multiple virtual hosts easier.

This book covers the basics of using VMM along with specific chapters for each virtual host platform. I only use Hyper-V and for that purpose this book did a good job of covering the fundamentals. With the book's guidance I was able to create virtual machines and then convert them into templates that can be used to create server instances.

If you are managing a slew of virtual machines VMM plus this book should be a part of your repertoire.

This book is the definitive guide to all things VMM R2. The authors, Michael, Hector and Cheng all work on the Virtualization and Data Center Management team at Microsoft and have been involved with VMM from day 1. It is fantastic that they have shared their collective knowledge in this Mastering VMM R2 book. This is a great resource in understanding and implementing VMM R2 in the datacenter.

Each and every chapter explained very well.
Chapter #9 on PRO pack development is simply great, very useful for Management Pack Developers and Admins.
I strogly recommend for new users and also experienced admins. "

Mastering VMM for Masters only...

I've read well over half of this book now and have found that the text is very, very repetitive. I've also found that there are many details left out and often have to refer to the technet website in order to figure something out. For example, nowhere in the book is does it explain how to add files to the library! Although there is a good amout of detail for other opeations, it just doesn't clearly explain a step by step proceedure...it just rambles on.

For the readers who are already familiar with VMM, this book will probably be fine but for those who are new, I do not recommend this book.
