I forced my kids to play Mastermind because I am a 40 year old child that won't let go of my own childhood. I loved Mastermind as a lad and, by God, I was going to make my kids love it to. My mastermind was brown. This one is gray (grey) (I heard that either spelling is now acceptable). The black and white pegs are much smaller than I remember and my big sausage fingers have a hard time getting them out of the slots. I get very frustrated and have to count to 6, sometimes 7. My kids love the game, I am happy to report. My five year old thinks she is really clever and codes her pegs all black. At this point myself, my wife and our older daughter all know her scheme, but play along so as not to crush her spirit. "4 black, again!?!? Who would have thought?" Some might say that is encouraging mediocrity and not challenging her to come up with more intricate codes, but it's Sunday afternoon. Can't we take a break, one afternoon from vigorous academics that will hopefully get her into an Ivy? I prefer Yale, my wife is Princeton, all the way. I know what you're thinking, "Yale ain't gonna happen if you continually allow her to code 4 blacks and then play along like you don't know she coded 4 blacks." In conclusion, Mastermind is a great game for adult parents that loved Mastermind as a kid themselves, to force on the next generation. Operation, on the other hand, is a game that was spawned by Satan himself.

Insufficient Amount of Key Pegs

This was a favorite game of mine growing up. I bought it to play with my kids. Though we love it, our game didn’t come with enough small “key pegs” so we have to reuse Key Pegs, which means that we can’t see our feedback from every codebreaking attempt. Are you able to send us more Key Pegs??

The best mind game

The best mind game, and it doesn't even use batteries! I remember many years ago (too many for my liking) when my sister and I would play this all day.
It is such an easy concept: one player chooses four pegs of ANY combination and then the other player must figure it out. It can be frustrating at first, but as one continues playing conceptual thinking increases. I was amazed how this game provided me a channel to start think outside the box.
If you want a quiet evening without phones, television, computers, et al, then get your friend/mate and enjoy this game!

Challenging and Fun with Not Enough Pegs

I played this as a kid and, surprisingly, it doesn't seem much easier for me 40 years later. The gameplay itself is exactly as you'd expect it, and can be frustratingly challenging at times. Seems like the first combination of pegs takes some luck and dictates the success of the rest of the turn. Main problem of this game is, as others have stated, the lack of smaller black and white pegs. If you go past the 7th or 8th iteration, depending on how many correct choices you had made in earlier rounds, you will need to remove pegs to use them later. Seems like such an obvious design flaw that could have been corrected years ago. I also agree that the shield to block the clue giver's pegs easily is flipped over, revealing the pegs.

Family favorite for fifty-so,e years

This game has been a family favorite since I was a child (I’m 60 years old). Trying to think of an additional inexpensive gift for my daughter, I was thinking games. I remembered how much she loved to play this as a child so I got it for her (now an adult). She was thrilled and immediately got her new husband hooked. Last year it was the wood stacking game that stole Christmas. This year it was Mastermind.

It is so much better than the new more colorful version

I use 2 baggies to hold the pegs inside the box. It is so much better than the new more colorful version. The new one looks like it will be great to hold the pegs on the side but it doesn't close properly and seems insecure to shove in a shelf of other games. I also am not a fan of the new color shades. The very best version was the original brown board.

It has been awhile since master mind was played, I first played with the original from the 80s. This version was brand new and had a big tray for the code pegs (average of 16 per color); a smaller tray for key pegs (16 black and 16 white) - Note: if anyone says they do not have enough key pegs (which would mean they always guessed all four color the first try) they are telling a tall tail.

The pins are much smaller than the slots and do not hold there tightly. Even so, once set, they are hard to remove because they fall too deep to the slots.
