A very nice rerelease of the Vox recording of Holst's most famous work...this album was (briefly) rerleased as a HQ CD recording years back, and the sound quality is very good. Susskind gives a performance with the St. Louis which is not the most passionate, but far from being a lifeless reading. At the price, you can't go wrong!

Given that this is a somewhat vintage recording, I thought the sound might be dated, but in fact is sounds very clean and spacious. I am not saying it is the best Planets recording out there, but as I'm listening to it I am hearing some very beautiful playing from the orchestra, especially in solo or small group parts, of which there are plenty in this work. The recording engineers were top notch, and one can hear lots of fine details. I would say the overall interpretation is lyrical rather than bravura/powerhouse, but I think such an interpretation fits the work nicely. At $2.39 it is a deal.

I have always loved The Planets but have only had one or two pieces on other albums. Having the whole thing on one album is great. I like the interpretation of the artists as well.

This recording sounds great. I love Holst, and this recording is clear and of good quality. It's great to find it in an mp3 format.
