Editorial Reviews

Following 2007's understated and unjustly ignored "Sucks Blood", this releases weaves John Dwyer's (OCS, Coachwhips, Pink & Brown) signature AM radio howl with the catchiest of driving tunes, Brigid Dawson's gorgeous harmonies, heightened fidelity, thick spring-reverbed bombast, mighty drums, and an undeniable pull. Look for them at SXSW. "Tunes only a soulless vampire couldn't enjoy" - Audio Lunchbox.

Thee Oh Sees are worth spending a night in. If the entire OCS (pre-Oh Sees) catalog was a perfect soundtrack to a lazy/hazy/crazy day, the move to the Oh Sees moniker transitions from day to night... only both sides of the equation somehow manage to retain the magical glow of the witching hour, all psychedelic sunsets and ghostly breezes intact. It's a nearly perfect transition. They have this uncanny knack for creating music that is so much more than the sum of its parts and influences, so for goodness sake don't buy into that ridiculous genre game. It's as if the chill that travels down one's spine when listening to really amazing music were handed a guitar and some drums with which to make music of its own. In other words, Thee Oh Sees are sorcerers. Let them ensorcell you. (Hint: this is perhaps best accomplished by experiencing them live.)

I absolutely love this album and recommend it to anyone who's a fan of Psych-garage rock with a sprinkling of surf and noise rock. The harmonies between Dwyer and Dawson in front of the wall of tube-driven guitars playing amazingly catchy riffs with sometimes slightly under-stated bass and drums... it just combines into this psychedelic maelstrom that you're going to end up neglecting other albums to listen to again.

I've had this monstrous playlist of psychedelic tunes that I've had going for years and years with everything on it from 13th Floor Elevators to Super Furry Animals, and everything in between. It gets added to, re-arranged, sometimes tunes get taken off. After I got into Thee Oh Sees a few years ago, so many of their tunes ended up on there. Really, I like all of their albums that I own (they have a pretty extensive discography, very prolific band) for different reasons, but Master's Bedroom and Help are tied. I can't decide, or really even care, which I like better.

I also highly recommend checking them out live. Very, very awesome show. They don't take themselves too seriously, but you can tell how hard they work at doing what they do, and I respect that.

When I hear you say Low fi, I think of a raw chicken breast with big gooey chunks of fat embedded into the edges. Not clean and not enticing. Just a blob of sound with salmonella dripping down your hand.

When I hear you say Thee oh Sees. I think of grandmas fried chicken. Grandma uses Lard and rusty pots to make the absolute best fried chicken. It is not weak or gross, it is a product of love that can not be franchised.

The master takes their favorite tools and creates something amazing. Really amazing.

Rock music that you can be proud of. I feel like they practiced these songs until they were "perfected" went into a basement of a studio and made this masterpiece in one take. The tube amps sounds like they should, the vocals are just beautiful. Drumming and bass are solid, but the chump with the guitar is bubbling over with talent. He could blow away the little piggies hut with a plethora of riffs at his choosing. But he is not intending to destroy you, he wants to rock your face off. And that he does.

Master Bedroom and Help are my favorites Oh Cs for sure. The other albums are good but these 2 are special.

How is this the first review for this album. Boy/girl vocals, reverb and more reverb. Simply excellent. Just buy it.
