Throughout all of the Masters and Mercenaries books Lexi Blake has dropped little hints about Alex and Eve's relationship. They're sexually committed to each other even though they're divorced; they never play with anyone else; and something awful happened to Eve which is why their marriage broke up. I have been waiting on pins and needles for their story.
This is Lexi Blake's best work to date in my opinion. The amount of emotional upheaval and conflict is not only brilliantly written, it's completely understandable. It's not often that two characters come from such well meaning intentions only to completely eff up their relationship and lives. They both truly love each other, so why the eff can't they work it out? Oh so many reasons, that Blake deals with marvelously.
Throughout the book we get to see Eve fight for Alex, Alex fight for Eve and both of them conquer demons that have plagued them for years. In addition to that is the introduction of a new character, Kristen, whose identity I guessed at almost the very beginning and was confirmed by the end of the book and I cannot tell you how excited THAT made me! The undercover op on this one is handled with just enough hints of danger and just enough finesse to keep it from being over done. It was a major page turner, once I started I couldn't stop.
The sex itself is incendiary and watching Alex become Eve's true Master again made me want to jump all over the place with glee and happiness. It was absolutely wonderful to see how they came together and how Eve maintained her sassy independence all the while submitting to Alex.
Also, can I just say that I really hope we eventually get to see Amanda from back home get her face smacked in by someone? Preferably Kristen? Perhaps in the next book?
But I digress. This book has it all and it's well balanced between plot, romance, hot sex, danger and a sneaky sense of humor. Blake just gets better and better, especially when on her own (I much prefer this series to the Menage series she writes in conjunction with another author, that one has devolved into mostly being about the sex... definitely not the case with this series!). I've loved all the books so far, but this is hands down my favorite in the series at the moment.
And the teaser at the end for Big Tag has me on pins and needles again =)
As always the plot is amazing, this is my favorite book of the series, so far. The characters ate so real, the readers feels like they know them. I am off to read book five and finally get Ian Taggart's story.
