While it is rather long for the pot I use for yogurt it is actually perfect for deeper pots that would be used for jams or candies. Also if it was shorter it would require it to be held closer to the heat source so this way it stays cooler.
The measurements are accurate and quick to update.
I find using this to both heat yogurt to 185 and then cool it to 115 makes the job much easier, no more having to hang a thermometer on the pot or clip it on the edge, just use this spoon for both stirring and temperature control.
Even as long as it is it does not tip out of the pot when I leave it sitting there, but if they had a spoon just a bit smaller I would have bought that one instead, but this this is great for what I nee it for.
I bought it and she and I tried it out together as I have had hit or miss luck with perfect candy like toffee, fudge, taffy or divinity, because of the lack of perfect reading on a thermometer. Knowing that those are the most difficult items to make and the temperature has to be perfect . . . we tackled toffee.
1.The directions for use were excellent, easy, easy, easy.
2.The digital temperature was perfect. Easy for me to read with my reading glasses on, which I have to use when I cook anyway. My friend, who is left-handed even agrees it deserves more than 5 stars. We waited, patiently, while the temperature readout hit the spot right on . . . no guessing as to whether it was a degree too low or too high, which is disastrous for candy recipes. No question as to the exact time to remove it from the heat and pour it into the pan to cool.
3.Easiest of clean up even with a hot sugar content. It took less than 5 seconds with a drop of soap and hot water.
With regular thermometers that you have to read while watching the (mercury?) move from the globe to the desired temperature OR until it hits ABOUT where you want the temperature to be are a waste of money. I can't tell you how many expensive ingredients I have wasted over the years while trying different recipes different junky thermometers!Read more ›
All kidding aside, the thermometer is accurate but the bowl of the spoon is quite deep. I used it to temper chocolate and it worked beautifully until I tried to get the cooled chocolate out of that deep bowl. I finally dunked it in the bottom of my double boiler.
I really wouldn't recommend this item to a friend.
12/3/15 - update - hadn't used it much over summer but just found out it's not as accurate as I thought. If you have another way of checking temp, check it. It was prob inaccurate during my canning ...
However, the spoon started to fail only 2 months after we bought it - Now, a brand new battery lasts only one day before it is entirely drained by the spoon.
We're past the Amazon return period on the spoon now. We will have to figure out how to contact the manufacturer (Mastrad). If Mastrad responds, we will update the review.
An otherwise 5-star rating is now a 1-star rating.
