Initial review: I am not super picky and I haven’t been to Japan for the real thing. I tried one at Starbucks, with less sugary syrup and loved it, but the next few times it was clumpy and not awesome so I decided to make my own. My first batches were from a mix I bought at Walmart, pretty good, better than what I made today. I just got this product and used a teaspoon to make my latte. It isn’t strong enough. I drank half a cup and then added another half teaspoon of Matcha. It mixes okay with my little frothy thing. The flavor is still weak. Next time I’ll probably do less milk, more water, and 2.5 tsp of matcha. I might add a touch of sweetness and maybe try a dash of salt to enhance the flavor. I don’t have a good recipe yet but I’m not disappointed or at least not yet.
***Update: I’m unable to perfect a recipe to give flavor to the latte without having tons of grounds at the bottom. I waste a bunch every time I use it and I am still not happy with it. This might make a good smoothie, but not a good latte.
It took one google search for a matcha to water ratio (8 oz. for every 2 tsp or 1/2 TBSP of matcha), and another on how to make a matcha latte SB style to get it right... in ONE go. I popped in the matcha, used my Keurig to fill my 16 oz Contigo thermos half way (8 oz.) with hot water, added 2 TBSPs sugar (SB uses TWICE as much and I always get a sugar high, XP) for the full 16 oz., popped on the lid and shook it up. I opened it back up, placed it back under the Keurig and filled it up with more hot water, with room for cream. Shook it again until well mixed, and done.
It was super tasty, super foamy (I used 1/2 & 1/2, heavy cream gives more frothiness) and so comforting with my morning eggs & bakey. A great alternative to black tea or coffee. Esp if you have GERD or IBS... or (as in my case) both. I'm definitely buying more. I just wish it came in larger qtys.
It's not bitter at all, very mild true matcha taste and fruity, almost banana-like scent.
I would recommend this over the many cheaper, but Chinese matchas on Amazon. The Chinese one's taste very fake and are not matcha at all. This is Japanese stuff. You get what you pay for.
Matcha Love is excellent. I'm surprised that most of the reviews for matchas here on Amazon concentrate on using matcha for lattes and other concoctions with all manner of fruit juices, yogurt, honey...organic/uncured, humanely harvested pollen from free-range bees, etc. The only way I've had matcha is straight up with a touch of sugar, and I love it that way. Matcha Love has a "grassy" quality with a hint of bite which I find remarkably refreshing and stimulating. My prep appears to be pretty traditional: at the bottom of the cup, dissolve a 1/2 (maybe 3/4) teaspoon of matcha in a tablespoon or two of water, work it into a smooth paste with a bit of sugar, add 6 to 7 ozs. of almost boiling water, and whisk until a slight froth forms (about 30 seconds with my miniature, battery-powered whisker). There aren't too many things better than a warm cup of matcha in the afternoon...well, maybe two or three fingers of a nice single-malt whiskey, but that's a different review for another time.
For baking, it held its color and flavor very well in a standard chiffon cake.
In smoothies and lattes, make sure you are first mixing the tea in some hot water. My tap gets hot enough, but yours may not. This helps you avoid any lumps. For lattes, I do 1 tsp powder and whisk in 3 tbsp of hot water. After well mixed, stir in 2 tsp of sugar or honey. Sometimes I add about 1/4 of a tsp of vanilla paste. Steam the amount of milk you prefer and pour in. It's very important at this point to allow the mixture to sit for a couple of minutes to "brew". If your water isn't hot enough or you skip this step, your latte will be gritty!
