Two Smart Truck Modes for Multiple Interactions
Smokey has multiple modes for different kinds of interactions. Depending on his positioning, Smokey can operate in one of two main modes--character mode or truck mode. Smokey is in character mode when he is half or fully upright, and says phrases such as, "Smokey here! Reporting for duty!" When Smokey is on all six wheels, he is in truck mode and can be pushed forward and pulled backward to activate lights and sounds.
Using motion sensors and sound activation, Smokey is always on alert. He knows how to say over 95 phrases and can sing 4 different songs. He won't sing every time, so keep raising and lowering him if you really want to hear him. Though he's always ready to play, Smokey will fall asleep if you leave him alone long enough. Press his lights or push him around to wake him up again!
Use Teamwork to Fight Fires
When he's in water cannon mode, Smokey is ready for teamwork. When he's ready to be a firefighter, he needs your help, and will say, "Load me up, chief!" Load the included "water" balls into the chute and use the lever to launch them at the fire. When you hit the fire, Smokey will say things like, "Good shot!"
Our testers had fun engaging all of Smokey's imaginative modes and sayings. With all the things he knows, Smokey is a smart, interactive buddy!
Smokey requires four C batteries (included) to stay active.

My complaint is that there are no instructions included with this toy. The worse thing is there's a small piece of clear plastic covering one of the battery terminals, so they don't connect until you remove it. I was getting ready to mail the truck back (after trying two new sets of batteries) when I read DrummerBoy's review. He gave the tip about the piece of plastic, which I'd have never seen.
The dumbest thing about that is the manufacturer's packing had the usual "Try me!" instructions, with an arrow pointing to the button "lights" on Smokey's roof. You press it, but nothing happens, so you conclude the batteries are dead or the toy is damaged. As I said, if it hadn't been for the other reviewer, mine would be back in the mail already. Amazon, you need to inform your customers better about what to look for. Don't rely on reviewers to point out problems!
I had no intentions of him getting the gift a month early, but foolishly left this toy under the tree where it was promptly discovered after poking and prodding. Oh well. He's happy as can be with it.
Last year, Stinky the Garbage Truck came out. He got a lot of criticism for making poop jokes and fart sounds. Smokey does a lot of that too. Now personally, I think its kind of funny. My son *really* thinks its funny. If you're the kind of person who gets bent out of shape about this, do not get this toy.
You'll need a supply of C batteries. My son has a full on freak out if Smokey doesn't work. Nothing except toys seems to use C batteries anymore, so pick up a pack of them when you order Smokey.
It seemed very sturdy and well made and he obviously enjoyed playing with it.
