This toy truck is probably toy-like in its metal detecting abilities compared to today's "real" metal detectors, but it seems about as sensitive as my old one, plus more stable and energy-efficient. Now instead of looking like a geek I can just send my kids out to do my dirty work for me, disguised as children playing.
As far as sensitivity goes, this thing will detect a bunch of keys though a 1-1/2 inch thick wood table top, plus 3 or 4 inches of additional air space below the table. It will detect large metal object like our kitchen stove from 12 to 15 inches away. In operation it mostly makes a pretty cool pinging sound like the sonar on a movie submarine. The sound changes and the green light changes to red when metal objects are detected. It has 2 or 3 volume levels. The sound seems to begin instantly when you sweep over a metal object, but does not end immediately as you get past the object. This makes accurate locating more difficult, requiring more passes from various directions.
The rear "box" of the truck is a removable digging scoop with a strainer type bottom. Dry sand will sift out, leaving your gold coins behind. I think this is a great concept overall.
Negatives... The truck could be built a bit sturdier. It is not horribly flimsy, but still I'm afraid my 3-year-old daughter is going to break something before we even get to a beach. In that respect I think the toy is better suited to 4-year-olds or older; maybe they can understand to be more careful. Probably older kids can better appreciate the science of the metal detection process as well. So far my daughter just thinks it is a truck that beeps randomly. Matchbox shows the truck being used inside of houses, but our floors are so full of hidden nails that it can only confuse or frustrate my daughter. Not only is the detector tripped constantly, but then you cannot see the nail that is tripping it off. On the bed or the couch cushions, the metal springs below become the issue. I'm not enthused about my daughter using this around the lawn, as I can't dig up my grass everyplace she might locate one of those old pull tabs. Then at the beach or in a sandbox I suppose gritty sand will get in the wheel bearings, but that would be an issue with any toy truck. Obviously in soft sand the low-mounted detector ring might sink or dig in, but I think kids will be smart enough to adjust for that. You can play games in the sandbox or with coins under the rug, but I think the lasting interest in this toy will depend on discovering real "treasures" out in the wild.
Despite a few issues, I like this toy and am excited to see my daughter begin to understand what it is doing better. I think we will have a lot of fun with it.
I was skeptical that it would actually function as a metal detector in much of any useful manner; it did!!! To test it out I buried some coins at various depts in our yard and he was able to find them all with the treasure tracker. Now he plans to take it with him on vacation and see what he can find!
I enjoy the fact that he hasn't grown tired of this already and that it has him out exploring. He has found several old nails and a really cool metal sign buried already in just 4 days! This is great for many age groups as they all are interested in finding "buried treasures!"
