Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2?Parents and early childhood educators eager to introduce the marvelous mysteries of math will find numerous suggestions here. However, the format is curious. Stating that the book is for two-to-six year olds, the authors proceed to provide text addressed to children and a paragraph identified as "helping little hands" which is for adults. While the second-person verbiage may be an attempt to be clever, it doesn't work. Perhaps some preschoolers are ready to read "vehicle," "wildlife prowl," "droppings in the snow," and such but most are not. The bold black-and-white cartoons done in a coloring-book style beg to be colored?fine for a home copy, risky for a library. One activity, "Kitchen Fun," suggests putting three measuring cups on the floor, filling the medium sized one up with water, and then seeing if the water will fit in the smaller cup. What about the floor? A curious cautionary notice on the back of the title page states "The information contained in this book is true, complete, and accurate to the best of our knowledge. All recommendations and suggestions are made without any guarantees on the part of the authors or Williamson Publishing. The authors and publishers disclaim all liability incurred in connection with the use of this information." Is it customary to have a "use at your own risk" note in activity books? Math Play! offers quite a variety of number, shape, series, etc., activities; however, use at your own risk.?Jody McCoy, Lakehill Preparatory School, Dallas, TX

We loved this book! This is for people who want to incorporateeducation into fun times with the kids but are sometimes short onideas. I would recommend this book for working parents because it is easy to be organized or introduce projects at a moment's notice when bits of time are found. All of the ideas and instructions are right there in front of you. It would also be easy to leave for a caregiver as a lesson plan. Stay at home moms can certainly use this book to help fill the many hours constructively.

I purchased this book four years ago for our child when she was a preschooler. This book is ideal for those children who like hands on learning activities and games. The book utilizes activities and games to teach mathematical concepts in a fun and engaging format. I would follow this book up with the Singapore Earlybird Math books 1A-2B, then proceed to MCP Kindergarten Math.

Great source for an Early Childhood Curriculum. This book gave me wonderful ideas on teaching little ones to counting and math. This book helped me plan lessons for my home toddler/preschool daycare. This book is a MUST HAVE for home daycare providers and home schooling parents.

We love this book. The activities are simple to prepare and easy for my 5-year old to understand. This is a great help in practicing beginners' math concepts with her.

I'm so impressed with all the activities in this book. I am not just picking and choosing activities to do with my preschool-aged daughter, we are pretty much doing every activity. And she is really learning to count. I love that all the activities are interactive and conversational. All areas of intelligence are included: science (count animal footprints or bird calls), interpersonal (find four ways we are alike), etc. All learning styles are also met: hands-on (make numbers from clay, make a counting wand...), auditory (includes some counting songs), and even olfactory (is that a learning style? Not sure, but this book has kids making scratch-and-sniff numbers using spices).

I'm in love! I decided not to use any kind of paper curriculum with my homeschool kids until they are at least 7 unless they ask for it, however I still want to "teach" them and help them explore. The Little Hands series is great for for this approach. Engaging, simple and fun!

Disappointed. I have the "science play!" book and that one has such great age appropriate ideas. Math play is really a waste of time in my opinion. While aga appropriate, its common sense stuff that your child probably does already. I'm giving this book away.

Some cute ideas but they can be found at many free websites. I didn't take the time to do the research until the daughter I bought them for pointed this out to me. I sent this to my computer phobic daughter.
