It absolutely does presuppose that you know a good deal of calculus and that your algebra is absolutely on point. It will make huge leaps from given assumptions to conclusions such that it could take the average undergrad hours to parse a paragraph, particularly in the optimization sections. So don't get too discouraged, just keep working it. You'll get there.
After all, it is useful information, and probably one of the better books available. So we struggle.
