About the Author

Anthony Barcellos is a professor of mathematics at American River College in Sacramento, a position he has held since 1987. In 1996 the students voted him Instructor of the Year. Barcellos was also the recipient of the 2014 Patrons Chair Award in recognition of his service to the college and its community. Mathematical Misconceptions of College-Age Algebra Students presents the results of Barcellos’s dissertation research for the Ph.D. he was awarded in 2005 from the School of Education at the University of California, Davis. His education derives from all four major sectors of post-secondary education in the state: Porterville College (a community college), Caltech (a private institution), Fresno State (a campus of the California State University) and UC Davis (a campus of the University of California). Barcellos has an extensive background as a writer, including the novel Land of Milk and Money (Tagus Press, 2012), which is based on his experiences growing up on his Azorean immigrant grandfather’s dairy farm in California’s great San Joaquin Valley. The Society of Portuguese-American Students of Tulare County honored Barcellos in 2016 with its MVPA literary award. The American Association for the Advancement of Science awarded him in 1978 a Mass Media Fellowship under which he served as a science writer for the Albuquerque Journal. He subsequently wrote on computer technology (PC Magazine, 1984-1985, MicroCornucopia, 1985-1987, and Sacra Blue, 1985-1990) and mathematics (Calculus and Analytic Geometry, 1992, with Sherman K. Stein). His interviews of Martin Gardner, Stanislaw Ulam, and Benoit Mandelbrot were collected in Mathematical People (Birkhäuser Boston, 1984). Barcellos’s 1984 article on “The Fractal Geometry of Mandelbrot” was honored with both the 1985 George Pólya Expository Writing Award and the 1987 Merten M. Hasse Expository Writing Prize from the Mathematical Association of America. His primer A Stroll through Calculus (Cognella Academic Publishing, 2015) presents the essential concepts of calculus in an intuitive way that should be accessible to anyone with the rudiments of algebra. Barcellos served as a legislative assistant to state Senator Albert S. Rodda in 1979-1980 under a California State Senate Fellowship and later worked for the Commission on State Finance (1981-1987) under State Treasurer Jesse M. Unruh.
