Matilda, the Algonquin's cat, is the tenth cat in the hotel's history. Seven of the cats have been male and named, Hamlet, and, of course, the females, Matilda. In this book, the author, Leslie Martini, has written the history of the Algonquin Hotel, from the point of view of Matilda, the hotel's cat. We learn about the people who work at the hotel, and who are the mainstay of the hotel's history. There is a great history here, the members of the literary Round Table, who met daily in the main dining room. Matilda's role at the Algonquin was and is quite inclusive. There are the famous rooms that many people have heard about. The rich history of the Algonquin is covered fully. The illustrations by Massimo Mongiardo, are colorful and vivid. They depict the day to day life of Matilda and The Algonquin.
Another of the most interesting points in this book, is the inclusion of a history of The Algonquin. This is on the last page of the book. I have stayed at the Algonquin, and saw Matilda first hand, roaming throughout the hotel. I had cocktails in the lounge, and she is a beautiful cat ignoring many but she does like a good pat or two.
A fun look at the Algonquin Hotel from a cat's eye view.

This is a fun book that children will love, but it’s so much more. The historic elements of the book remind us of days when people were more giving, welcoming and creative. Matilda’s birthday party and cat fashion show fundraiser every year at the Algonquin are a testament to those days.
Anyone familiar with this hotel will love the book, and cat lovers world-wide are sure to include The Algonquin as a stop during their next visit to New York. Can't wait to share this charming story with cat-lovers, friends and family!
The illustrations are first rate and match Matilda's whimsical narrative voice. The hardcover is worth the purchase as this is certainly a keeper!
It's a wonderfully funny book that also teaches and allows families to share in a tradition as they visit NYC and stay at the Algonquin Hotel specifically to see the infamous Matilda
