I gave 4 stars because for 5 something really has to blow my mind and well, there is no half star otherwise it would be 4.5.

This is not my first Android box but it is the first to deliver a seamless set up, good browser speeds and being optimized for Kodi. I really like the App changer feature which allows me to search apps without shutting down the current one running. Load speed is fast due to larger RAM. Like most of these devices you really should buy a wireless little keyboard, it will simplify your life endlessly.

The customized user interface is very nice and extremely easy to navigate and use. Very intuitive.

Now for the goods! Kodi runs brilliantly on this system. I have an elaborate, highly customized skin and GUI settings based on Phenomenal in Kodi 16. This runs my skin no problems at all. I use my box heavily and so far only 2 crashes where I was asking a lot from the processor so to be fair it may have been my fault both times.Maybe its just me but SALTS is running faster with more hits from more scrappers that I use to have disabled! Scrobbling works flawlessly too, unlike my previous boxes where it was unreliable. Live TV streaming flawless and loads fast. The CEC command wqorks perfectly where my previous "lesser" units never would.

I would definitely recommend this box to anyone who doesn't want to shell out the $300 for the Nvidia which for all indications and reviews read MAY be better but I can not ascertain that having never used one.

In a nut shell I would have given 5 stars if remote included was'nt the same basic one that comes with all these types of boxes and there was more HDMI plugs. 2 is just enough for a flash drive and the remote control upgrade interface/charger,

This is probably the best bang for your buck KODI box. The performance specifications is amazing. This runs KODI faster and smoother than my LG G3 (phone).

This has no problems with my wireless AC router once I reset my router and the G-Box Q (GBQ). This is one gotcha of many for this unit (and my router).

It came with an HDMI which I did not use but love the fact they gave you one. I forgot I would need one but I already had spares.

Also included was an infrared remote. This is reliable and stable but requires line-of-site (physical, unobstructed view) between the controller and the box. I have lots of stuff my wife puts around, called decorations, that gets into the way of the G-Box and my remote. I bought the Matricom Flymote but this had its own quirks. The USB connection for wireless control helps with the line-of-site issue, but the battery on that remote would drain rather quickly which also affected the range and input consistency. I HIGHLY recommend some remote keyboard capability. This will help with setting up the unit to your configurations and leveraging some of the TV Add-ons features. I happen to have a Logitech PS3 wireless keyboard touch-pad (which uses a USB transmitter) which happen work for me.

First item to note is that KODI takes some configuring to add your TV Add-ons. It is not difficult, just some time to learn and time to do. You can download the app on your android phone and practice before hand. As for configuring it on the GBQ, this is where I recommend a keyboard/mouse/trackpad. This changes a grueling task to a tolerable task. Once your apps and add-ons are installed, you can leverage your remote for navigating the menus.

For remote operations, the keyboard works great, not perfect. My keyboard does not have a home button or a button to activate the menu or active apps. If it did, then this would be better. The track pad or mouse is a must for apps that do not support TV remote direction pad navigation. I need touch-pad/mouse operations for YouTube and Netflix apps.

There are a few key items I would like to note about the unit that makes this unit a 4/5 star without any comparison.

1. This unit does not have a power off button. You cannot trust the lit "G" on the unit. It does not sync with the unit when it is on or off. The light may turn on and off as the newer TV turn on and off. HDMI's Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) sends mixed signals. If you turn your GBQ off this way (via the TV), you may not be able to turn it back on without the original GBQ infrared remote.

2. A plus that I did not expect is the ability to control the box with my TV remote. This is done through the Bravia Sync (or CEC). This is done with newer TVs via the HDMI's CEC capability. I know that LG (SimpLink), Samsung (Anynet+) and Sharp (Aquos Link) have similar capabilities. So, the issue with the line-of-site to the G-Box is somewhat remedied. I can use my TV remote aiming at the TV to navigate the menus (once the GBQ is configured).

3. The video is processed faster than the audio on apps natively via HDMI. So, Youtube Netflix and Hulu audio comes in slower. There is no ability to speed the audio (or slow the video). The audio and video are out-of-sync. (Think of this like a dubbed chinese movie where even the explosions in the movie are also delayed). Please note that on KODI/XBMC you can compensate for this. I tried re-installing the firmware (which I would not recommend for beginners) which did not correct the problem. As a saw different reviews about the unit, I have noticed people use the optical cable for audio. I tried connecting the optical cable to my receiver and no audio was coming out. I disconnected the HDMI cable from the GBQ and some kind of reset occurred where the optical interface started working (another GOTCHA). This audio was in sync with Netflix, YouTube and Hulu. Since I am already using my receiver, to view content, I was able to get the GBQ to operate to my satisfaction. So those that want other video streaming services to work on your device, you may need to leverage the optical cable (and do not forget to disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable).

Understand the reality of Android TV and it's a good box

I want to start by saying that this box is my first venture into the Android TV box world. I have to Google everything I want to do on the box as everything is a first for me with this box. Having said that, I know how to use Google pretty well, and I am decent at following instructions, so setting up the box hasn't been difficult.

For anyone considering purchasing an Android TV box and is new to this world, you should understand that the idea that you will be gaining access to all the free channels that you can imagine is a misguided one. Yes, there are TONS (as people have said) of free TV channels. But the vast majority of those channels, if you live in the U.S. are not channels you will watch as they are from different countries. If you live in the U.S. and are looking to cut cable out of your lives, this is not the automatic answer. Why not? Yes, you have a vast library of TV shows and movies at your disposal that you can watch at anytime. That's a huge plus. But as far as I know, there is no way to pause, exit the show to do something else, and then come back at a later time and resume it where you left off (like on Hulu, etc.). It's possible that I have not yet discovered this feature, but trust me, I've looked. But this shouldn't be a deterrent in buying this box or any Android TV box for that matter. What duped me is that the available streams of live U.S. TV are minimal. I'll go through the trouble of finding a live TV (called IPTV) addon to put on my system and then it either doesn't work (because it's no longer active) or channel links within the addon don't work. From what I understand, links/addons breaking is pretty common. I thought I could watch any channel at any time. Not the case, but this is my learning curve and not the box's fault.

This box comes without any addons pre-programmed into it. Pretty much a blank slate, which WILL seem daunting to someone like me without any experience. But I was able to make some really good progress in the last two weeks getting addons installed that will make the system useful. Then last night, I decided to wipe it all and start with a pre-built addon that someone else created to see if I might like it better. Well, I don't, and now I have to spend time removing that build and installing the addons I had previously that I liked. The thing is, by going with custom builds from others, you are relying on them to maintain and update the addons within their builds. Many times, as I understand, this does not happen and leaves your build ineffective and not performing like it should. I am going back to adding everything myself, but this is a personal choice.

Also, because you are streaming video, don't expect the video quality to be perfect. Sometimes it will be and others it will be terrible. This is especially true when trying to watch sporting events. I have great internet speeds and am hard-wired into my router, so no wifi issues there.

The remote that comes with the box is not perfect, but it's a good starter remote. You'll want to pick one up with an actual keyboard, playback buttons, and a page up/down button to make life simpler. Just be careful what you buy because there are some real duds out there that will leave you frustrated.

You'll probably need to go into the main settings option to zoom out on the screen size to get the picture to fit right. This really isn't a big deal, but you should do it sooner rather than later. Anywhere from 93-96% should do the trick. Took me two weeks to finally do that, and it's made a huge difference.

My advice: Temper your expectations. This box, as I would guess many similar to it, is pretty awesome. But you are silly (like I was) to think that it will act like your cable or satellite provider's box/DVR. Don't expect to have access to the same cable channels that you currently do. It's probably not happening, at least not consistently and without a lot of effort and work. Or maybe learn Russian. You could be set then.
