I'll begin this review of the Matrix M-Stage headphone amplifier with a brief comment on its (not too subtle) similarity with the Lehmann Black-Cube Linear. Clearly, anyone looking at pictures of the two would find that with the exception of some minor details the two amplifiers share the same overall shape, same board layout, gain switching solution, etc.) In addition, their specifications are very similar as well (if not downright identical). So, naturally, my initial reaction to it was to just shrug it off as an inexpensive clone (a knock-off, if you will) of the Linear, and to move on. And yet that would have been a mistake. This review, while colored by personal opinion and the quality of the other audio components used, is an attempt to judge the M-Stage amplifier on its merits, and if there are issues with its genesis then I shall leave them to (those) whom they may concern, namely Lehmann and Matrix.

The Matrix M-Stage is a class A biased headphone amplifier based on the low distortion, high gain OPA2134 dual operational amplifier from Burr-Brown/Texas Instruments. The op-amp is of the DIP8 version and therefore the M-Stage is amenable to tweaking (e.g. op-amp replacement with OPA627s, etc.) The particular unit I have (and review here) is factory stock (2010/2011 version, purchased new from TamAudio a few months ago) with two (gold plated RCA/line) analog inputs (47kOhm) and one (also line) analog output (60 ohm) - for preamp duty. A front-plate mounted switch allows to toggle between the two inputs. Four switches accessible from the bottom of the unit enable one to set the amplifier gain to 0, 10, 18, 20dB as desired.

I needed a good volume boost for high impedance headphones, but I also need accurate nondistorted sound. I am getting exactly all of that with the Matrix M-Stage. Very satisfied to have finally found just what I needed. Obviously uses high quality components for a great product.

It might better to connect with line out, I just simply use that with phone out on mac, it is still have improvement, but not that much, it have more detail and easier to drive for Q701, I am looking forward to connect it with line out see if there is huge improvement.
