The new device is a very worthy choice for most consumers. It is substantial without being overly heavy. Its spring-loaded mechanism grips one’s phone securely but gently. The face hood is soft and comfortable and effective at shielding distracting outside light. There is a clever and practical mini-plug jack, allowing one to attach earbuds or headphones and listen privately—a feature entirely missing from the earlier View-Master VR product. The design is handsome, the build solid, the materials first rate. And the packaging is very attractive. This would make a dynamite gift at Christmas.
But now the cons. If you are a serious 3-D enthusiast, as I am, and if you are looking to use the View-Master Deluxe VR to view stereoscopic movies and photographs, I counsel you to look elsewhere.
The first, most obvious drawback in the design of the View-Master Deluxe VR is the lack of head straps. The headset is no doubt meant by its makers to be used for relatively brief periods, and to be passed easily from one person to another. But believe me, you will not be comfortable holding this substantial device up to your eyes for the duration of a 90-minute 3-D film. I did manage the trick once—lying flat on my back, absolutely still, and letting gravity and balance do the work my tired arms could not.
A second strike against the View-Master Deluxe VR is that the lens separation is fixed at 65 millimeters. (I measured.) Depending on the width of your phone’s screen and the size of the images you wish to view, it may not always be easy or comfortable to fuse stereoscopic image pairs, particularly those having relatively high values of positive parallax. Resizing the images on the phone’s screen helps, at the cost of diminishing the total pixel count and softening the apparent resolution. While a fixed 65-millimeter lens separation is entirely reasonable and will probably work just fine for most casual users, the dedicated 3-D enthusiast would no doubt prefer having the option of variable interocular.
A third disappointment is that the lenses chosen for the View-Master Deluxe VR have a fairly long focal length—40 millimeters, I believe I read. This is meant to magnify the images such that they fill more of the spectator’s field of view, imparting a more dramatic, “immersive” effect. But one practical consequence is that portions of the left and right images are entirely occluded from view. In my personal experience viewing 3-D films using the View-Master Deluxe VR, the left edge of the left-eye frame is invisible, and the right edge of the right-eye frame is invisible. In the fused pair, only the central portion of the frame appears to have stereoscopic relief. This is really unacceptable.
While the lenses themselves seem to be of good quality and certainly outshine many others I have seen, there is a wee bit of chromatic aberration (color fringing) present. This was most evident at the extreme top and bottom of any given stereo pair. This by itself was not a deal-breaker for me, as the films I watch are generally presented in the 16x9 format, but if you expect to view full-frame VR imagery, you will wish to be aware of the chromatic aberration.
While I really do think the View-Master Deluxe VR is a high quality product, well worth its reasonable price, it probably works best when used for its intended purpose—relatively brief periods of viewing proprietary View-Master content. But certain very specific shortcomings in its design make it unsuitable for those of us who may wish to make more serious use of it. If you are a 3-D movie buff or a stereo photography hobbyist, you will probably wish to look elsewhere for a suitable Google Cardboard-type headset.
The only cons are:
-It doesn't come with a head strap, so you have to hold it the whole time. Though this is probably intentional, meant to limit screen time, since this is a toy marketed towards children.
-The audio out is a bit of a pain to fuss with.
-Depending on the app, sometimes the focusing can be a bit weird.
