Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This is a spelling game which combines some of the elements of Scrabble with those of chess (in terms of needing to plan ahead). Since the idea is to make four-letter words, winning the game isn't about the sophistication of your vocabulary, but about your ability to look at the board and consider what you can spell with each turn. Also, players who take advantage of making two words at once and doubling their score will win more readily than those who concentrate on single, high point value words. The game is much more about strategy than spelling.
Many other reviewers asserted that this is a poor game for adults, but my husband and I found the strategy element of it engaging enough to make it enjoyable to play. It's not Scrabble, where you have to make the best word from a random number of letters and a complex vocabulary would be helpful in winning, but since Scrabble already fills that niche, this game appeals to a different type of player – the type that can think several moves ahead. We liked this element of it, and my husband, who is very good at chess, found it especially interesting to play (and he always won, but that was okay).
One aspect of the game which is claimed – fast-paced and simultaneous play – doesn't actually work unless you have an external timer attached to the gameplay. The turn can't be completed until the last person chooses a letter so all other players have to wait for the slowest player to finish. This generally isn't a big problem, but it's not really as “fast” as a result of this. Also, since the fact that strategy is more important than spelling means that it can be slowed down by someone (quite reasonably) plotting to get the best score. In terms of blocking someone's strategy in this regard, it's not impossible to do, but the wheel turning element makes this tricky with two players (it's easier with 3 or 4) because you don't really gain access to letters the other party might want for a few turns. Also, most people plotting a double-word, double-point strategy will map it out with the least common, high point letters first and the more common letters will show up again relatively quickly due to the fact that you put the tiles for completed words back in the bag. You can block, but not for too terribly long and at the expense of your own word-building.
I think this is actually a simple to play and understand game which requires some deeper thought and planning to be good at. Anybody can play it in its simplest form so it's good for kids. For adults, it can also be more complex and that was what I liked about it.
