Product Description
The Juice Box Personal Media Player is entertainment in the palm of your hand. Mattel created this amazing, innovative way for you to watch your favorite movies, music videos and television shows whenever, wherever you want. It's one of the smallest and lightest personal media players available.
The pocket-sized Juice Box has a high-resolution, full-color, 3-inch LCD screen. Pop in your favorite Juiceware media cartridge (cartridges sold separately), and you're ready to watch your favorite cartoons, TV shows, movies and more. One sample cartridge is included, with content from Cartoon Network and Vans Triple Crown. It also plays downloaded music from MP3 files and displays digital photos, with the help of an MP3 Starter Kit (sold separately). Juice Box also features a built-in speaker and a headphone jack for your own headphones. Go ahead and toss it in your backpack or pocket -- the flip lid will protect the screen from scratches.
Unit measures approximately 4" x 5" by 1.5". Requires 3 "AA" alkaline batteries, not included. (A/C power adapter also available separately.)

The one big problem was the soft coating had turned sticky so it was very unpleasent to hold.

First what I do agree with, at this point there does seem to be a lack of available cartridges and the ability to play mp3s is an extra cost and probably should be provided with the base unit.
What I don't agree with is that everyone seems to say the picture/video quality is bad, we also have the Gameboy Advance and the video is at least as good if not better and the screen is a little larger as well. I just hope everyone has removed the plastic screen protector. I also purchased the mp3 kit and have to say that the mp3 player is quite nice. While you can't rely on the internal speaker for good audio quality with headphones it sounds quite good. It will hold as many songs as you can fit on the sd card and will accept up to a 512mb card so that is quite a lot of songs,146 at 3.5megs each, so I don't know what the reviewers are complaining about when they say it won't hold very many songs, even with the supplied 32meg card you should get around 9 songs on it and you can use other sd cards and store as many songs as you want, it's not ipod but it also isn't $300.00. The menus are easy to use and informative and my 7 year old has no trouble navigating through them and it has the added feature of viewing photos which until recently even ipod could not do. I'm thinking of buying another one for my own use to take with me on business trips so not only can I have the music I want to hear I can watch a slide show of pictures from home to help chase away the blues.
As for durability and construction, time will tell, but the unit seems well constructed except for the flip open protective door that covers the screen which I can see getting caught on something and broken otherwise I don't see any other obvious problems. Some have complained about its light weight but I see this as a positive for both the player and the cartridges because you don't want a portable player to be heavy and bulky do you?
So overall I think this is a pretty good unit, for kids as a multifunction device, and for adults as an mp3 player and picture viewer. The only real drawback I see is the availability of cartridges for the kids but since we bought it primarily for the mp3 player the video portion was not of great concern. If you want portable video buy a portable dvd player the video is better ( if you get a player with a good screen ) and the selection of dvds is of course almost limitless.
First off, features. Yes, it says that it can view JPG photos or playback MP3s. The thing is, you'll need to purchase a separate device to load your pics and songs onto a cartridge to do so. So, if that's what you or your child wants to do, be prepared to fork out even more money. It is primarily meant to be a video player, but I have my doubt about that as well.
Second, quality. The videos I watched on the JuiceBox were grainy, washed out and barely viewable. The sound was poor and the screen seemed smudged, no matter how many times I tried to clean it. Again, some may say "What do you expect? If you want good sound and picture, buy a DVD player." Not a good comparison, as a DVD player can cost up to 10x as much. No, better to compare it to a VideoNow Color--which blows it away in terms of clarity of sound and picture. Even the videos for the Gameboy Advance are better than this.
And finally construction. Talk about poorly made. It's as light as (if not lighter) than a deck of cards and the plastic feels cheap and thin. The screen's edges looked like it had air bubbles under it. I don't think it would last more than a day in the hands of a seven year old. I literally could crush this thing with one hand if I wanted to. And the cartridges the media comes on are even worse. They are as light as a matchbook and would probably snap in two if squeezed.
Overall, I am terribly disappointed with this product. Yes, it is smaller than the VideoNow and can playback MP3s or display photos, but only at an additional cost. For about the same price, the VideoNow is a far better portable video player for kids, with sturdier construction, more content and better video quality.
