The threat of a connected world creates a deep-in-the-gut fear for many leaders. The Internet and especially social media shout: Danger! Personal lives, careers, businesses, and organizations are all at risk of damage so overwhelming it doesn’t even have a name. Is it the risk of public failure? Having to do things differently? Loss of control over the dialogue? Bad reviews of us or our organizations? Attacks by whackadoodles? All of the above? What is so frightening? Fear of losing control over every little detail prevents attention to details that do matter. Meanwhile precious energy is lost protecting yourself and your organization from change that's not fully understood or appreciated. Exhaustion and inertia kick in. Bottom lines go red. Now that is the truly scary stuff. Readers of Matterness will escape this trap. Matterness: • Recognizes the real and imagined dangers of social media without coddling • Emphasizes the dignity and value of each person’s voice in a truly connected world • Gets to the heart of why so many people feel powerless when they should be feeling powerful • Uncorks and pours a tall measure of perspective on the remarkable opportunities of the social age, and a bit of fire-in-the-belly encouragement to make the most of them This book explains that we don't need better people; we need better leaders who focus on the stuff that matters. When people matter the most, the priorities change. We begin to see our organizations from the outside in, listen to suggestions and ideas, work with and not at other people and organizations. When we're in conversation and connected we can direct how we want to work, get to the essence of our personal or professional goals, and make work manageable and enjoyable again. If Customer Relations, HR, and Leadership had a social media lovechild, they'd call it Matterness.

Allison is one of my favorite authors on the subject of using social media for social change. Here, she expands on her earlier books, this time looking at the overall picture of leadership and at organizations making change happen. A must read.

"Matterness" is a powerful call for corporate and individual responsibility on the internet (and elsewhere, for that matter). Fine tells moving stories of how the social media has been used to point up unjust situations. She identifies ways to exercise positive influence and to establish trust. She is a voice to be listened to. I am an admirer.

What people are saying about Matterness: What Fearless Leaders Know About the Power and Promise of Social Media
Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2014
"Allison Fine has written the essential guide for organizational success in the social age. One of those rare books that actually achieves what it explains. For an organization, nothing matters more than Matterness."
Ken Segall, Author, Insanely Simple
Matterness makes a compelling and uplifting case for how our world is changing to honor the value of every single one of us. Fine explores the technologies, institutions and, yes, people who are helping usher in this new age of individual human dignity. Maybe it took the digitally immaterial to finally show what it means to matter.
Douglas Rushkoff, Author, Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now
"Allison Fine has done it again! She lays out the concept of "Matterness" by offering best practices, stories, and examples of ways of working for organization as they ride the second wave of the social media revolution."
Beth Kanter, Author, Beth's Blog
"Matterness provides an essential framework for understanding why people and organizations matter so much to each other right now. This book is packed with great stories and important lessons, and should be mandatory reading for leaders of all organizations."
Susan Crawford, Author, Captive Audience

Every book I've read by Allison Fine is insightful, easy to follow, and has a deep impact on my work. In Matterness, Allison blends psychology, strategy and leadership to help us all better understand how we can cultivate communities where we are all our best selves. Regardless of whether you see yourself as a "social media person", this is a must-read. The fact is that the forces Allison discusses in Matterness are a seamless part of today's culture and society, and thus anyone who considers themselves a current or future leader (of anything) needs to understand these new rules of the game. Also a great book to read as a staff, as a board, or with a group of like-minded professionals.
