Matthew is a good guy. He's doing the best he can to hold the family together, manage a monster of an adult sister (jilted by a should've been fiance), and cope with the very recent deaths of his parents and disappearance of his youngest brother. His plate is full. But he's 25. Not young. In 1830's, he's a full grown man. So to find him unwilling to face problems head-on and act immediately, rather than think "he'd have to talk to her (either wife or sister), but it would have to wait" seemed like something a much younger, much less mature man would do. I wanted to smack him the third time and fourth time he did the same thing. He knew better.
The sex scenes caught me off guard but only because when in the virginal, completely inexperienced viewpoint of his bride, she's thinking terms that no clueless virgin would know. Maybe him, who'd had plenty of experience, but not her. By about 1/3 of the way through the book, I'd started to trip over repeats, telling me information I already knew. Inconsistencies made me shake my head (where was the editor? where is Beth's amazing writing?) like first saying there is no water in the house (pump is outside) before they get to the ranch, but at 1/3 of the way through the story, they're pumping water into a bucket in the kitchen sink. Between repeated information (come on! Trust me for 15 minutes to remember it the first time!). The repeats were about several different subjects/thoughts and continued over and over again. Drove me batty, especially when they were in Houston together, and Mr. Prentiss (in the land office) became Mr. Stinson (the bad guy) through the ENTIRE scene. They're even talking about what land is owned by Mr. Stinson, and the land agent is continually "Mr. Stinson", all by accident. A few times both Matt and Hannah acted so foolishly, so STOOOPIDLY (no motivation), I wanted to slap them silly.
Despite formatting and editing issues, the book had much to recommend it. It's a moderately strong opening to The Circle Eight Series, which I bought in whole some time ago when they were all on sale. I'll likely keep reading the rest of them, and crossing my fingers they improve. This book was apparently, best as I can tell from copyright dates, written long after the author's Malloy Family Series. I don't understand why it's so awkward, rough, and poorer in quality than the Malloy books.
