About Mauna Loa Macadamia Nuts
More than 30 years ago, Mauna Loa started perfecting Hawaii's most sought-after nut. Its first macadamia nut trees were planted in 1946 near Kea’au, Hawaii. In 1976, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation began converting old sugar plantations to macadamia plantations. Most of those trees are still producing the premium macadamia today. Mauna Loa currently offers a delightful variety of macadamia products, from chocolate-covered nuts to Kona coffee-glazed treats. Our boxed chocolates make the perfect Hawaiian gift, while our dry-roasted baking pieces provide the complement to your favorite recipes.
Milk Chocolate (Sugar, Milk, Cocoa Butter, Chocolate, Nonfat Milk, Soy Lecithin and Pgpr [Emulsifiers], and Vanillin, Artificial Flavor), Macadamia Nuts, Sugar, Contains 2% or less of: Confectionary Glaze, Dextrin, Corn Syrup, and Cornstarch.

The other bad reviews that complain about the nuts being too small are actually well based. The "candy balls" are a bit smaller than your regular gum ball. From there, more than half of the candy is just the chocolate covering. The size of the nuts that you will find in the bag are small and not even the full macadamia nut. Sometimes we found a few pieces of macadamia nuts and just a bunch of chocolate.
The chocolate itself is really good. We are eating the first bag, and we are enjoying the chocolate so far, but it does get very sweet fast. It is really hard for any of us to taste the macadamia nuts. Even if we remove the chocolate first, the nuts are not really that tasty. I don't know if they are not that fresh or because the chocolate flavor is too sweet.
I must say that I am disappointed in this product. I won't buy it again online. And, to make the situation even less pleasant, it's four bags per order. I could have bought some other good chocolate candy instead. Perhaps if the chocolate coating wasn't that thick compared to the actual macadamia nuts, it would be better.
I have uploaded some pictures to show the dimensions of the candy. Hope that helps.
I share 1 of the 4 bags with my Other Half, and didn't compare our findings until we were both done. My first bag might have been a fluke, 2 or 3 of the regular large sized candies then almost all the rest the size of Raisinettes with a small handful of mere crumbs, no macadamia nuts at all. The chocolate is a nice, creamy blend, but to have 85-90% of each one with a half mac nut or smaller has never happened before.
The second bag was much the same, this time poured into a shallow bowl so I could eyeball the contents. 3 of the partial nut candies tasted rancid, another actually had a bitter/sour taste inside. My 3rd and final bag thankfully had nothing spoiled but the individual pieces were obviously factory seconds, what we would cull from the conveyor belt line in the old days when I worked for Del Monte.
I checked with DH and he was surprised and not in a happy way with the contents of his own 6 ounce pouch. "These are like bits and pieces-the baking stuff you buy all chopped up, then covered with good chocolate. The photo shows the same whole, large candies we've always gotten. Did you get a big discount on this or something?"
No, but I believe these should have been labeled as seconds, sort of like Jelly Bellies do with their Belly Flops. There is a market for oops type product but not at full price. I am giving 2 stars for the nice chocolate coating but no stars for the nuts. I checked, and all were in the same lot.Read more ›
We discovered these in Hawaii and we treat our family to these twice a year on the subscribe & save program (great discount since we order other items as well). Just a little taste of Hawaii until we can travel out there again! And we agree also that the milk chocolate perfectly balances the nut. The dark just doesn't taste as good.
