Editorial Reviews

Review

These stories are very light-hearted. I kind of like the "don't mess with me I'll turn you into a frog" attitude Maven has in this book. Maven stint as a frog is also a cute story. Maven gets to hop a mile in the shoes of those she would look down upon. It's a light-hearted way of saying it's what's on the inside that counts.

From the Author

These three stories were written as I was putting the concept of Maven Fairy Godmother together. I originally planned to make a series of short stories, rather than a novel, but as happens to many authors, my characters took off in their own quests.

These stories happen in the future after the first novel, which turned out to be a prequel published first. Time does not flow in a linear direction in Faery, so the future often happens before the past at least from the perspective of some other space.

None of these are spoilers for the novel, but just side adventures for our intrepid granter of wishes. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed writing them. May all your wishes be granted, and be careful what you wish for!

I'm not sure whether reading Maven Fairy Godmother first adds to the humor or confuses. Having read the novella (Maven Fairy Godmother: Through the Veil), I was quite pleased to find the further adventures of Maven in these fractured and funny tales.

The author and I have known each other for more than 30 years and I was often there when the budding of the ideas included in this book as well as her main novel were born. She has a way with myth and fairy godmothers so if you enjoy a slightly tilted view of the fairy tale world, this is your next read. And if you like this offering, she has another published work called Maven Fairy Godmother which is also available at Amazon. She funny and she looks at life through a slightly slanted viewer, see if you look at things the same way.

I really enjoyed these takes on fairy tales. Charlotte Henley Babb possesses a fabulous imagination! Each story is so imaginative, who knew there was so much to be mined from the old standby fairy tales? Charlotte sure did! My favorite was "Fairy Frogmother" which had me laugh out loud a couple of times. This collection is also a nice intro to "Maven Fairy Godmother." A good read for a buck!

One tiny problem I had was that there were a few errors where it was obvious that two versions of the story had somehow become combined and that bumped me from the book. However, I'm a professional editor and I'm never sure if other people will even notice. Or if the author has already corrected them all--I bought this several weeks before reading it.

What a delightful and zany read, very fun! If you liked Mr Magoo as a kid with Fractured Fairy Tale cartoons, Zena the Princess Warrior on TV and the like, then you will have a delightful afternoon or evening read with this. Short enough to read quickly with plenty of good chuckles.
