The author said that Maverick would be a fun, smexy, low on angst read and it was all that and more. From the first page I was hooked, my heart instantly invested in the story, and with each turn of the page that feeling became more and more intense. I enjoyed spending time with Mav and Riley and loved watching as they danced around each other until they decided to dance together and was quite disappointed when there were no more words to read.
Considering that I have not yet read all of Karina Halle’s books and that there are thankfully more coming in the future, this statement may be a tad bit premature (so give me a little wiggle room in the future *grins & winks) but...Mav and Riley are my FAVORITE of her couples. Right from the start I adored both of them. Maverick, aka John, is known as the town manwhore, something he isn’t all too bothered by, but there is so much more going on beneath that smexy as sin alpha male exterior. He is all kinds of alpha, but he sees more than people know and has a compassionate, tender and honorable heart that shines through. From the first meeting with Riley, I adored her. She is open, honest and has a way of babbling that is more endearing and amusing than irritating. I loved how comfortable she was in her own skin and with her sexuality. She hasn’t had an easy life, but she’s worked hard to come to terms with her demons and grab hold of her future.
From the moment Mav and Riley collided the air around them crackled with electricity and smexyness and the more time they spent together it became so obvious that they just fit. Their flirting was fun and sexy and their smexy times should’ve come with a warning sign stating that panties should be discarded and have either your man or B.O.B (or both) nearby. But what got me the most was how similar they viewed life and the world and there was no question they were perfect for each other. While the angsty was low, there were a few issues that threw curveballs at them, but I liked the way they worked through it all and where they were at in the end.
Maverick definitely has a different tone in comparison to Wild Card, but it has no less heart. I loved hanging out with the Nelson family and those they call their own, and though grandpa is still my favorite he may have a little competition in Chewie. And now we wait (some what) patiently for Hot Shot and what it will take for Fox and Delilah to have the blinders finally ripped off.

Maverick is such a refreshing read. It's fast-paced and an exciting story of Mav and Riley. Not to say that there aren't rough patches in their story (they are SAR after all) but their crazy chemistry is off-the-charts HAWT! They are smoking hawt together. So hawt. Did I mention how hawt they are?
Riley is such a great character. Loved how she took what she wanted, never played any games and was REAL. She is so real that even Mav kept telling her how unreal she was, but cause she is just that kickass. When I grow up, I would love to be a quarter of a badass like Riley.
And of course there's Mav. I don't know if there are any leading men in Karina's arsenal that don't make us have to change our panties after reading her books. He tried as much as he could to stay away from Riley, but they are inevitable and also insatiable.
Loved every page of this book. I cannot wait to read about Fox and Del next.

Riley Clarke has just recently moved to North Ridge to fill a position on the Search and Rescue team. She's leaving behind a past she wishes she could forget, a devastating event that left her reeling and fleeing the town of Aspen where she had been a part of their Search and Rescue team. This position in North Ridge will hopefully give her a new lease on life, a new start.
Riley is an unapologetic go getter, she is who she is and makes no apologies for it. As soon as she sets her eyes on Maverick, she knows she's in trouble. He's her boss, but hot damn, he's delicious! And she wastes no time sending him very definite signals that she's interested in him. But as much as Maverick is drooling over her as well, he needs to maintain a professional relationship. Fraternizing with coworkers and subordinates is a fireable offense, and damn it, he's worked too hard to become the guy in charge to throw that all away now.
Well, Maverick has never been known to follow the rules, and soon enough these two are engaged in lots of activities to keep themselves warm on those cold winter nights! Karina is really good at writing the sex, that is for sure! But the story isn't just about the physical, it delves into the emotions that both Riley and Maverick are feeling. Feelings and emotions in their lives that they've kept hidden for a lot of years. Riley still struggling with the events that happened back in Aspen, the one she loved and lost. Maverick dealing with family issues, the struggles of feeling like he has to always be the happy one with no problems, but who is still dealing with the loss of his mother when he was just a young boy. Can these two manage to get past all these emotional obstacles, as well as the literal obstacles that stand in the way of them having a future together?
Karina always impresses me with her writing, and this story is no exception. There's plenty of emotion as I mentioned, as well as action that includes several hold your breath moments. They are Search and Rescue, after all, and the story wouldn't be complete if there weren't a few death defying moments and heart in your stomach scenes that had me flipping the pages as fast as I could to see what was going to happen. And if you've read the first book in the series, Wild Card, you'll be happy to visit with the whole family again. We get several hints throughout Maverick that set us up for the third book in the series, Hot Shot. I can't wait to see if Fox, Maverick's brother, and Delilah, the girl who grew up with them on the ranch, finally find their way to each other.
Another great installment in the North Ridge series!
