The Maverick ET-733 Redi-Chek Wireless BBQ Meat Thermometer has been precision engineered to allow you to monitor the temperature of your barbecue wirelessly. Each Redi-Chek BBQ Thermometer has two monitoring units. One that you leave near the BBQ and one that you can take with you UP TO 300 FEET AWAY. This Maverick thermometer comes with DUAL PROBES SO YOU CAN MONITOR TWO TEMPERATURES AT THE SAME TIME. It even has built-in alerts that will notify you if the temperature is rising above your desired level so you’ll never overcook or over smoke your meats again. It’s PERFECT FOR LONG SLOW ROASTS as the provided probes allow you to monitor the BBQ temperature as well. Outstanding for use as a smoker thermometer. The AUTOMATED ALERT WILL RING OUT IF THE TEMPERATURE GOES ABOVE OR BELOW YOUR DESIRED TEMPERATURE. In fact, it works right up to 572 degrees. As an ADDED BONUS, this purchase includes an ADDITIONAL 6 FT HYBRID PROBE; a perfect addition to your grill accessories.

(An update, unfortunately) Fast forward a couple ow weeks. I was on a big project: smoking a pig butt. It takes at least 10 hours to smoke with very consistent temperature. Suddenly, about 5 hours into the process, the probe went crazy: the temperature would suddenly drop to single digits, then shoot up, down again, up again, or displayed just "E" on the screen. There is a built-in probe in the door of the smoker so I knew the temperature inside was approximately correct. What scared me was the prospect of losing the meat temperature probe. This went for about ten minutes, restarting the probe didn't help. I restarted it several times and then just gave up. After ten or so minutes, the probe went back to normal and held fine the next five hours. The butt came out perfect but I have to downgrade the probe a couple of stars.
Now some discussion on preparing (set up) the Maverick for upcoming BBQs. Before I purchased this device, I noticed a few negative reviews that pertained Maverick's performance and/or set up process. Some of these reviews maybe fair and justified or they may not. The best review and recommendations one can receive, comes from someone that's LIKE YOU in skills and ability. I'm part of what you call the "Pre-tech generation". Remember we left the "12:00" flashing on our VCR's because we didn't have the patience to fix it? We are the "Plug-and-play" generation. So why say all this? Before purchasing the Maverick, you need to know your level of patience and ability of setting up the Maverick for desired temperatures. The instructions that come with the Maverick, isn't the greatest in my opinion. Now my friend who's an electronic engineer would probably disagree with me, but most likely he wouldn't need to read the instructions in the first place. After a investing a little time, I did discover that setting up Maverick is somewhat simple. However; it does come with a learning curve needing a small amount of time to familiarize yourself with the device. Once you get the hang of it, you'll love the Maverick. I strongly recommend you first go onto Youtube and watch a few videos on setting up the Maverick. It's where I went that made the process much easier for me. There are great videos on Youtube that's extremely helpful.
Another area of challenge is finding access to the meat for the probes. The cables of the probe can get damage if you close the lid on them and pinch them. If your smoker or BBQ doesn't provide someway to get to the meat while it's cooking, you'll need to make some accommodations. This could require putting soft gaskets around the lid edges or even carefully cutting a slit for entry. Be careful with this process as it may compromise the smoker. Lucky for me the Weber Smoker provided a place for cable entry. I suspect some negative reviews by previous users could been from the result from cables being pinched effecting the temperature read.
In conclusion, for the ONE time I used the Maverick Wireless Dual Probe, it worked great and had a lot of fun with it. However, despite it being easy, I can see how some users may have difficulty setting it up. If you know yourself not to be patient or willing to put in the time in setting up such devices, you might want to continue your search. If anything changes on my next cook, I'll adjust this review accordingly. Hope this helps in your decision.
Range is good, I've walked around the house with the receiver in my pocket and it occasionally misses an update (temp shows double dashes) but if I go by a window or back outside it picks it right back up. Never had a real problem with the two communicating. Just be aware when you start it up, turn on the receiver first and let it initialize, then turn on the transmitter. Works fine every time.
It came with three thermocouples and I'm still using the first two. The directions say not to submerge but every time so far I have put them in the dishwasher and haven't had any problems.
The alarm is audible but for my ears too quiet but then I'm part deaf - too many years working in the engineroom of a ship....
So, overall I'm very pleased and it is one of my most valued BBQ tools.
