Product Description
Wireless Smoker Thermometer tells the cook the internal temperature of the smoker and the internal temperature of the foods being cooked in the smoker from up to 100 feet away.
Amazon.com
Smoking meat and fish properly can take days. So, rather than going out to the smoker to check the temperature time and time again, simply install a RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer and rest at ease. This handy thermometer monitors smoker air temperature and food temperature from up to 100 feet away. And, if the temperature drops too low or jumps too high, the RediChek alarm goes off, so there are no spoiled batches-just certainty that every batch of smoked salmon is perfection. The RediChek can also be used with an oven or grill for peace of mind while baking, barbecuing, and broiling and for fewer trips to the kitchen. Best of all, the RediChek is wireless, so installation is a snap. Your purchase includes four AAA batteries for out-of-box use. --Brian Olson

While a handy device to have, this particular design falls short because of some fundamental flaws.
The primary flaw is User Interface - it's straight out of the 1970s. To try and and independently set alarms for either the smoker Hi/LO and or the food HI/LO is almost impossible to do correctly right out of the box. Even after using this thermometer for many years, I still have to consult the user guide to program the thing. With confusing controls - and only the ability to set temperature limits in the positive direction - miss your mark - you need to continue up until the thing wraps around and start again - it's just very frustrating to use.
But then, you're never sure if the alarm setting correctly takes effect. Strike one last year when I thought I had the thing programmed to alarm when my food hit 170 F. After setting my desired temp, I must have hit "reset" instead of confirm. Things looked ok - it was measuring my food temp accurately. But then a few hours later, I'm thinking "It should have hit my temp by now". Manually check sure enough - the food's at 190. One roast ruined.
Now second strike - Xmas day dinner. Standing Rib roast. Go through frustrating program of Food "Hi" limit - being extra careful to get it right at 120F. Check / verify all connections and probes. Wireless receiver is showing the correct oven temp, and roast temp. Checking at the halfway point - rotating the pan - temp's at 111 - almost there! 45 minutes later, "hmm - that seems long". Wireless receiver still shows 111 F for the roast. "That's odd" I think. Checking the roast, I happen to glance at the sending unit - it shows 134F!!!! Something went wrong between the sender and receiver - with the receiver stuck at some "old" value. Poor failure mechanism - it should show some kind of error value if it's not receiving properly.
This thermometer failed me too many times with its poor user interface and design control. Into the bin it goes while I look for new unit.
If you use this unit , plan on still manually verifying things on your own - often during the cooking session.
Per review below, I ended up purchasing the ET-723 series wireless units and they work great. See my review for those units.
Experience with ET-73 units:
- Application was making venison jerky in a charcoal smoker.
- Utilized smoker ambient temp probe with metal clip that mounts to the grill grate in the smoker.
- Smoker & transmitter located on my deck, 15 feet from my dinning room table with a glass patio door inbetween. (line of sight between transmitter and receiver)
Initial setup & testing:
- At the kitchen table I followed instructions for installing probes then batteries and syncing the transmitter / receiver.
- With the units sitting side by side I could see changes in the temperature on both units and they appear to be communicating correctly.
At the smoker:
- Probe was installed on the grate and lid to smoker was placed over the probe with care not to pinch the mesh probe wire.
- Transmitter and receiver sitting side by side and still working at this point.
- Walked away from the smoker/transmitter (approx. 5 feet) and the receiver appears to have lost sync with transmitter.
- Transmitter temp and receiver temp were not synced. Transmitter Red LED and "satilite icon" showed activity, but no update on receiver.
- Moved to kitchen table (approx. 15 feet) and same result.
- Moved back to smoker and set receiver next to transmitter and they started working. Moved away and they stopped again!
Troubleshooting:
- Installed fresh batteries. Assumed weak signal maybe a result from dying batteries. This didn't work.
- Let the temp probe return to ambient room temp. Let it sit inside for 15-20 minutes. This didn't help.
- Made sure temp probe was firmly inserted into the jack on the transmitter. This didn't work either.
- On second attempt, receiver would not sync at all with the transmitter.
Summary:
- Feel the design utilizing an internal antenna is not robust enough. Limits the range of the units and possible external interference causing unit malfunction or loss of signal. We have a lot of wireless info floating through the air these days!
- My units are most likely defective and this can happen with products made in China. Their quality standards are not like the US and you sometimes will get a bad product right out of the box!
I am returning my ET-73 units and have ordered the ET-723 units to give Maverick a second try. The concept of these designs are awesome with regards to the benefits and features they provide to the end user, when they work! The ET-723 is a little more expensive, but I am willing to pay a little more for an item that looks like it addresses previous design flaws / issues. The ET-723 units include external antenna's on both transmitter and receiver which should help with the transmission range. Sounds like they fixed some of the other little annoying issues as well including external on/off and sync switches on both units and an alarm for loss of signal. If anyone is interested, I found a nice website that talks highly of the Maverick wireless thermometers and gives some good advise on how to handle the probes to avoid future damage.

Where this falls down is in the setup. First you have to turn on the sending unit then the receiving unit so they can sync. Normally (60% of the time) that works. If it doesn't, you have to shut everything off and try again. I usually get a sync on the 2nd try but it has taken me 3 times. That is a little irritating.
What is the most irritating is how you turn on the sending unit. You have to open up the battery compartment to get to the switch. By the way, there is a screw slot to twist to open the battery compartment and it works backwards. You turn clockwise to open and counterclockwise to close. To make matters worse, there is a plastic piece that is a snap fit on the back used to mount the stand. That has to be removed to get to the battery cover and I cannot get if off without a tool (usually a screwdriver to wedge it off).
So my feelings at this time is that I love the use of this device a lot. But the irritating user interface issues really bother me.
