I'm surprised to see one star reviews. This product works great for me and makes grilling a lot more fun. One review complained that his device is defective and gave it one star. Yes, if your device is broken that is bad. But send it back and get a new one. Doesn't mean the device sucks, you just got a bad one. The other person didn't like the type of screws the product uses and gave it one star. Seriously?? How freaking critical can people be? Next thing someone will give it one star b/c the color black wasn't the shade they were expecting. You can nit-pick any product you buy from Amazon, but if the product does what it is supposed to do then give it the credit it deserves.
The product does what it is supposed to do and makes it easy for me to put a steak on the grill and not have to stand there the entire time checking on it to see if it is ready yet. As far as my friend goes, this will be the perfect gift so he can have a cookout while having a beer with his friends and still have great steaks come off the grill. Nuff said.
A few days later I then tried a butterflied chicken in my Rocky Mtn. Smoker. Again I used both the Charmglow and the Maverick into separate breast pieces. This time I wrapped the portion of the Maverick probe that was exposed out of the meat with several wraps of aluminum foil. While my old unit was showing 170 degrees the Maverick was showing 158 degrees. I checked both portions of the meat with my Thermopen insta-read and the chicken temp was 168 degrees in both portions.. The wrapping of the exposed portion of the probe appeared to have helped accuracy a great deal. The 12 degree difference, If proven to be consistent I could probably live with. A person would think for the price involved the product accuracy could certainly be improved. This was not a scientific test by any stretch of the imagination, but I hope a good comparision of the two units involved.
I like that it has two probes. I like that the probes can withstand higher temperatures. I have one set up to monitor the temperature of the grill at the grate level. The other measures the internal temperature of the meat. The temperatures between the dial thermometer on my Big Green Egg and the Black Maverick vary significantly. I am certain the Black Maverick is more accurate.
So, like I said, I like this device. I would buy another one. I haven't seen another product that seems to be better for the money,
I received a second thermometer exactly as this one. After installing the batteries in the transmitter and receiver, I set it aside until I needed it. Three days later I went to use the thermometer and, guess what, the receiver batteries were dead. I never got to use this one as I immediately boxed it up and returned it. Since then I have bought a Weber 6741 dual probe wireless thermometer. I've had it 5 days but have not used it yet. The batteries are still good, though.
UPDATE: 1/16 Temps continue to be inaccurate. The transmitter ports vary by at least 5 degrees before placing them in use. I can reverse the probes and the same thing occurs. One port reads 5 degrees high no matter what probe is inserted.
