About the Author

H. A. Robinson is a jet-setting billionaire with a home on each continent, who spends her free time saving kittens from trees and babies from burning buildings. A graduate of Hogwarts and a frequent visitor to Narnia, she drinks coffee in Central Perk and tames dragons on Westeros. In her dreams… In reality, she’s a support worker living in a small town in Cheshire, who would almost always choose fantasy over reality. She’s been an obsessive reader from the moment she picked up her first Enid Blyton book, more years ago than she cares to admit, and enjoys nothing more than getting lost in new worlds and adventures from the minds of all the amazing authors out there. She’s had the voices of characters in her head for as long as she can remember, and puts them down on paper in order to convince herself and the men in white coats that she isn’t crazy.

--- "There are monsters in any walk of life, Max. Just because I meet a [d*ckhead} in Pizza Hut, it doesn’t mean I’m gonna give up on pizza for life. [Eff] that. I love that cheesy [shiz]." ---

Oh the Road to Wonderland Series... Always highly anticipated, always delivers, always makes me want more. "Max Colton's Road to Wonderland" is no different. It's a coming of age journey that is packed with emotion, sensuality, and humor, a touching story that excellently explores friendship, love, self-discovery, and triumph over adversity. The writing is clever and witty, every aspect of the story so incredibly defined that you don't just envision the scenes before you, you're simply in them with no knowledge of making the trip or decision to immerse yourself in it. Max was introduced in the first book of the series, and up to now we've learned little about him except that he is a good, fun guy. In this book we finally see the makings of this good guy, and I can guarantee you that you will finish reading without your opinion of him having changed, except to be raised to greater esteem, because Max Colton will capture your heart with a grip so tight that you're likely to remember him for a long time.

Max is eleven years old when the story begins. He's grown up in a house where nearly everything that he does spurs negativity, punishment and scorn and reaffirms the notion that he's been saddled with his entire life--that he is not good enough. Max's father is a man who, under the guise of character-building expectations and discipline, seems to delight in breaking his son's spirit.

Your sent to a boarding school.
Your only 11 years old.
You hate it.
Your a target.
Your bullied.
Your laughed at.
Your constantly the butt of everyone’s jokes.
They ridicule you.
Your teachers look at you with disgust.
You are alone.
You have no-one to lean on.
But you have no choice but to be there.
You go about day by day saying nothing.
Not speaking a word.
It’s easier that way.
There is no escape.

Because the one man you always wanted to be proud of you is the very man that sent you there.
Your father.

But in one defining moment in your teens will change everything.
No more being bullied.
No more being a target.
No more being ridiculed.
No more being looked at as different.

But that is still not enough to get his attention. To get his smile. To get his approval.
What will it take?

Welcome to Max Colton’s story.

From a young age Max has always wanted the one thing he will no doubt get.
The approval of his father.
Max adores his mother, she is his comfort, his home. But the one thing he craves is the attention of his father.
But it simply seems out of reach.

Max continues his life striving to be the best he can be. Constantly knocked down as a child, Max is determined to be something. To achieve. To grow. To succeed.
Failing is not an option.

We watch the life of Max from a young boy, struggling to be accepted.
We watch the life of Max as a teenager finally being accepted by his peers and fellow class mates.

I have to start by saying that I thought I wasn't going to enjoy reading this book. The beginning starts with Max's childhood and I wasn't too happy with what was unfolding. Something about the story kept pulling me in until I was totally engrossed in Max's life.
His childhood certainly molds his behavior as an adult and even though I was ready to kill his father in a slow, methodical way, it created a character that you just have to love. Max's life isn't simple though and love seems to elude him at every turn.
I couldn't stop thinking about what was going to happen next every time I had to put the book down. The end left me wanting more Max but even if there's not a sequel I know he will survive!
Read it, you won't be disappointed!

Favorite Quotes:

“I want to be all cool and smooth, say something that would go down as one of those epic quotes from the movies. Instead, all I can manage is, ‘Drink.’ World changing. Drink. That’s it. All I can manage with the most beautiful girl in the world in front of me is drink. I want to smack myself around the face repeatedly…”

“I can’t help wondering whether he’s as hard on her as he is on me. Is that just how he is with everybody? I’ve spent my life believing I’m just one giant disappointment to him, but for the first time ever it occurs to me that maybe the entire world disappoints him.”

“She carries her kindness almost like a badge of honor, impossible to hide from the world, which she doesn’t even try to do.”

“This thing called life has a way of testing us all a little too much, doesn’t it? I think we’re all ready to take a holiday back to childhood sometime soon… Or maybe not. That wasn’t too much fun either.”

My Review:

I adore Max, he is smart, witty, rich, successful, driven, and fun, but he is also terribly flawed and forever scarred and deeply wounded by his arsehat of a sperm donor. I am astounded in noting this is the author’s first book. I am extremely impressed with the skill in carving out banter and humor in the midst of the tension and melancholy musings, as that balance is a difficult divide to cross, yet H. A. Robinson proved quite agile and repeatedly traversed this chasm in an unfailingly entertaining and enthralling manner. Ms. Robinson has provided us with another well-crafted and intelligently written installment of a highly addicting series that I would gladly keep reading into perpetuity.
