Product Description

Platform: PlayStation 3 | Edition: Special

For Max Payne, the tragedies that took his loved ones years ago are wounds that refuse to heal. No longer a cop, close to washed up and addicted to pain killers, Max takes a job in São Paulo, Brazil, protecting the family of wealthy real estate mogul Rodrigo Branco, in an effort to finally escape his troubled past. But as events spiral out of his control, Max Payne finds himself alone on the streets of an unfamiliar city, desperately searching for the truth and fighting for a way out.

Combining cutting edge shooting mechanics with a dark and twisted story, Max Payne 3 is a seamless, highly detailed, cinematic experience from Rockstar Games.

With this review I will briefly cover Max Payne 3 as a game. I will not go into too much detail, but instead cover some common issues other players have had with the game. I will also skip talking about the multiplayer since I do not play a huge amount online myself. I will try to give a bit more detail for the Special Edition content, which includes my quick video on most of the content.

The first thing worth mentioning about Max Payne 3 is the amount of detail in the environments. I say this because so many have complained about the graphics in Max Payne 3. Yet every single location you play through looks so believable, no environment looks vacant of life or detail. Just as impressive is how varied these environments are. You will play through apartment buildings, a cemetery, a prison, and so on. Sure these kinds of environments are almost common place in most action games, but in Max Payne 3 they have a level of detail that is so impressive you can't help but appreciate them more.

Now as far the character models are concerned, I will admit they are a bit disappointing. I would not say the character models look horrible or anything since they all do have good detail, but their facial expressions do leave a little to be desired. Facial animations simply don't look as detailed as other games on the market, which can be important for a game heavy on story telling. However, character animations certainly help make up for this, they are simply amazing. Every movement Max, his allies, and his enemies make look fantastic and again believable. From simple running movements, to being shot (which can look incredibly violent at times), or just a character tumbling from a platform, nothing looks terrible or even close to bad.

I played the first two Max Payne games a few months ago after a really long time. I beat the first game the whole way through and was really fond of it. However, I started playing the second game and while it was not a bad game IMO I was still not very fond of its' gameplay. That being said, I was a little hesitant about Max Payne 3 but I decided to get it, and I am glad I did. Everything about the game, from its' gameplay to its' dialogue, is spot on with how a Max Payne game should feel. For people who have never played Max Payne, I would recommend playing the first game before buying this one, just to have some sort of knowledge with how a Max Payne game works. While it may not be for everyone, I am a big fan of Max Payne and this third installment is a great game and a must-buy.

I'm a big fan of the Max Payne series so I HAD to own one of these!
Since I got it used, I can't say a thing about the digital content, as it was not included (well, sometimes the gods of gaming are gentle to you, sometimes you do get some unused DLC on used products...)

In my case, I've got it almost new, the keychain was new, the statue was still wrapped, and the lithographs were beautifully intact, smelling like they just got off the printer!

Here's the review of the contents (as I haven't played the game yet, since I'd rather do it on my PC first to get optimal graphics and a lag-free game)

*Keychain: Even though it's a beautiful thing (very well detailed, with a Rockstar Games emblem on it), I can tell you should be very cautious with it, as it does look like a real bullet and you may get in some trouble (your experience may vary on this one!) If you get in trouble, twist the cap at the end of the "bullet" so law enforcement officers will know you're not "evilly plotting" (kudos to whoever got this reference!) And yes, you CAN store some stuff on the keychain, I just have no idea on what would fit such small space... maybe these tiny bolts and screws from toys?

*Statue: I don't know if it happens to ALL statues of Max Payne, but mine came with the tip of one of his pistols (the one that looks like he just shoot with) bent down, as if it was melting. It feels rubbery and not entirely plastic, so maybe there's a fix for that, but I didn't bother doing it since I wouldn't risk breaking that part.

Imagine waking up in a basement, bound to a chair, the smell of sweat punching your face. When you open your eyes, you can see a naked woman through the threads of the bag over your head. But you can also see a half dozen guns pointed at you. You're terrified, excited, bizarrely turned on. You're Max Payne.

I am a huge fan of the series, gripped by the story ever since Max ran through my Pentium III. Rockstar has put together a fine package blending the old controls with the modern feel of current third person shooters. The bullet time works wonders, and the last shot super-slowmo still seems fresh. I love the opening credits with the flashbacks of the old Max with the new. It really feels as if ten years has gone by. Max is older, harder, but time has only allowed his demons to breed.

Forget the big open world maps like other Rockstar titles. This game is linear, but that's the way it's meant to be played. There's definitely a Kane & Lynch feel to the gameplay. Overall, a great game with a gritty, noir-ish feel. Well worth the money.
