It really is told just like you can imagine a dog thinking. He finds ordinary things in the yard that he imagines as dinosaur parts. It is a simple read, but unlike other easy-read books, I like it as an adult.

What makes a great book for new readers? These books need simple sentences and words, yes, but most of all they need a story (and pictures) that makes kids laugh. Are you in search of a great book for your new reader? Dinosaur Hunt is a great early reader for kids in kindergarten and 1st grade who are now reading full sentences. It would also be perfect for preschoolers who loves silly stories and illustrations.

Max is not your typical dog. He is a hunter, a skilled and persistent hunter. He will track down the biggest beast of them all - a dinosaur. So Max tracks down the head, and then the body. But as all kids know, you can build a dinosaur out of anything.

The illustrations are wonderful. Zany and silly, they draw you right in. This is perfect for kids who want a silly story. Catrow is the illustrator of many books, but this is his first as both author and illustrator - you can tell that he loves dogs.

This book is about a silly spaniel named Max who thinks he's a dinosaur explorer. He goes into his back yard and finds dinosaur even when a cat laughs at him he still believes he has found his dinosaur. The author put his heart into the book by basing his writing off of what his spaniel does (His name is Bubbs). The illustrations in this book makes you believe you are right there beside Max whom would make any child laugh at his funny antics while he is collecting the dinosaur bones.
I thought this book was cute and my children loved it too.

Don't let his looks fool you -- Max Spaniel is not a dog. He is a great hunter. And his imagination is as great as his playfulness. Remember when you played outdoors in the summer, and the garden hose was a snake, and the climbing bars were a bridge over hot lava? That's how Max hunts -- with inventiveness and joy. Take your time with this book and flip the pages back and forth, and let your child explain to you what Max found, and how he fits each piece into a "dinosaur skeleton." Great fun for ages 3-8.

I think this book is great, because my kids ask to read it over and over again, they participate during the reading, and it helps them to understand anticipation. They love to help Max on his adventure. My Daughter giggles over the ending no matter how many times we read it. I would definitely recomend this to any parent that has children with a great sense of immagination...

My son's kindergarten teacher send this book home in his reading folder. I read the book twice, then he read it all by himself. Only two words tricked him (idea & teeth). After the third reading, my three year old was completing the sentences. The pictures are very fun to look at. My boys especially loved the Abe Lincoln Log ribs and tulip lips. They were both laughing pretty hard though out the book.

We want to read the next two books in David Catrow's Max Spaniel series: Funny Lunch and Best of Show. I think my boys will be sad to return this book to school. I may just have to order it. I am planning on putting a library hold on the other books to see if they enjoy them as well.

I just bought this book for my 7 year old tonight. I was going to save it for Christmas, but couldn't. My daughter absolutely loved it. Needless to say, the illustrations are worth the price of the book.

As my son got older (closer to 4) this book got more interesting and understandable -- however, it's still a little weird. The Dinosaur towards the end gets more believable and easier to "see". However, the book by far - is not our favorite. I would not buy it again or recommend it.
