My other cat was showing very early signs of this at the time his brother had his surgery, and I was attempting to brush his teeth daily with a bristled finger brush and paste made specifically for cats. It was obvious that this was very uncomfortable and traumatizing for him, even though I have very docile cats that let me clean their eye goobers, clip their nails, inspect their mouths, etc. with little to no resistance, since I have done this to them regularly (to get them used to it) since I adopted them when they were 6 months old. (Vets have actually commented and commended me on how easy it is to handle and inspect my cats.) I know he doesn't really like this gel either, but it is painless and takes mere seconds, so it is much easier on both of us.
The bottle comes with a small vial of powder. When you get the product home, you add the powder to the bottle of liquid, shake it up, and then it must be kept in the refrigerator. Once a day, you put a small amount on your finger, then apply to the upper gums on both sides of your pet's mouth. It can be used on dogs or cats, and the product's expired when it changes from blue or green (good) to a brown or yellow color (expired). Since some animals do not like the cold temperature of the product, my vet suggested filling the empty vial with a small amount of product and keeping it at room temp, since it would be used before going bad and expiring. However, when I tried this I found it difficult to get just a small amount out (this is super easy with the tip of the squeeze bottle, but too much was spilling out of the vial), so I opted not to do this. When I apply it to them both every day, all the product gets used up before going bad. I also buy a smaller bottle since I only have 2 cats - a larger bottle would probably be better for someone with a dog (since slightly more is needed for a dog) or multiple animals using this product.
My other cat will likely eventually need to have his teeth removed like his brother, but this product will help delay that and assist in helping us keep his teeth for as long as possible. It is easy to use, simple, quick, and overall a great product that IS recommended by vets.
The only reason I gave this a four star was because it's a little messy. Because it is a liquid it really doesn't stay on a tooth brush, so I use a cotton tip to apply. I like to use a tooth brush, because it helps get the solution up under his gums, so occassionally we get messy.
