Long-time friends Jamie and Laura team up to solve a double-murder. Jamie is a man of logic and doesn’t believe in ghosts, no matter what the residents of Caerlaverock Castle say. Laura believes in her gift and when her cousin, Lord Herbert, asks for assistance, she goes on behalf of her mother. Sparks fly between Jamie and Laura but both Laura and Jamie keep their feelings secret. It’s only when Laura’s life is in jeopardy does Jamie see the truth about his burning love for her and the identity of the murderer. This is a prequel to Casie’s The Guardian’s Witch (which I highly recommend). Casie sucked me in from the first paragraph and I actually cried out when it ended. I want more and I can't wait for the The Highlander's English Woman! Jamie is my favorite character in this story.
“How. Dare. You. Stop. Me.” She spat out each word. The men were silent, like reprimanded schoolboys. “I’ll make sure to tell my father how Lord Bryce takes liberties with Glen Kirk property or should I tell him a Ravencroft patrol lost their way in the forest and I needed to provide them with directions?”
Scarlet stains appeared on the leader’s cheek. Laura was aware of the enemy she’d made, but with good cause. The Mitchell men looked at each other, not knowing what to do.
My Rating: 5 stars
Briefly the main characters have known each other since childhood and meet up again when the h comes to the castle where the H is busy completing his duties to the Maxwell before finally going to settle down as a farmer on his own estate. There is a mystery to solve about a pair of ghosts who haven't been able to go into the light. The main characters become involved in solving the mystery of a pair of young lovers whose story ended in tragedy when the man appeared to have murdered his lady love. There is not much romance here and the main purpose seems to be in solving the mystery. There is the supernatural element with the ghosts and the h's apparently "magical" leanings.
This book did not appear to end on a cliffhanger but there is mention that the love story between the main characters will continue in "The Highlander's English Woman". I then preordered that book. Imagine my surprise in discovering that this book is way from complete and that the love story did not begin at the end of this book. Quite the opposite actually.
My sincere advice is to skip this book and just buy "The Highlander's English Woman", since this book is included in that one.
