First of all, most fans are mounted directly to the roof so removing it means breaking the seal with the roof and many screws. This one has a simple plastic mount piece that is attached to the roof and the entire fan unit slips into that. So later if you want to take it out for any reason you remove just 4 screws on the side of the plastic mount, unplug two wires, pull up and it comes completely out. Very nice. Since this fan is more complicated there are more things to go wrong so this might be a welcome feature, not that I'm expecting that. It seems very well made.
Another nice feature is that it uses a modern chopper circuit for controlling the fan speed. Every other RV fan I've seen use resistors to drop down the fan speed which is very low-tech. They get hot and waste energy. Most often we are on battery using our fan (otherwise the AC would be on) so it always annoys me to know that not only am I wasting battery but heating the RV (slightly) to boot. Even though it's more powerful than my old fan it draws less power at the lower speeds because of the chopper circuit. For example, at the middle speed the old fan draws 0.9 amps and the new one 0.8, and it's moving more air. Because it has more speeds (10 vs 3) the lower speed is lower. The lowest speed uses 0.6 amps with the old fan vs 0.17 amps on the new, and it's nearly silent.Read more ›
Easy install with the enclosed instructions. Product arrived in a timely manner and in good condition.
Just FYI, we got the white lid, thinking it would be similar to the fan we had originally. However, this fan is built out of much sturdier material than our original. When it's closed, it doesn't let light in, so the room is much darker than it used to be. Not a problem for us, just something to be aware of. The "smoke" lid might work better for your needs if you want some natural lighting.
It was purchased and installed in May 2012. Since then (October 2013) it has had two failures that made the fan inoperable. First the gearbox self-destructed in December 2012 and the cover would not open or close, then the cover motor stopped opening and closing the cover in September 2013. In both cases the fan would still work but the cover could not be opened.
In both cases a call to Airxcel customer service resulted in replacement parts being quickly sent to me at no charge since the fan is within the 24 month warranty period. However, I had to remove the fan, do the repairs myself and re-install. Not a big deal since both failures happened while I was at home, but would have meant no fan/ventilation if I had been in the bush. Also, it doesn't leave me with a good feeling about when it goes out of warranty.
When it works, this is a great system for my camper. I can set the automatic mode and it will turn on/open when it gets hot and close when the temperature cools down. Also, at night I can have the fan on the low setting (1 or 2) and hardly hear it. The integrated rain cover works well so far and the fan keeps a breeze going when the humidity is 100% (rain); but I haven't had it open in a heavy, driving rain yet. The remote control for the open/close and fan speed is very convenient. I can easily change the settings or close the cover at night without getting out of bed. Lazy..yes, but very nice.
As mentioned, it is super quiet at the low settings. Can't even hear it on the lowest setting and in my (smallish) camper this is enough to keep circulation going at night.Read more ›
