Really fine budget collection of the late John Martyn from the late 60s up through the late 80s. Sound quality is excellent. Of particular interest to me was disc 3 which has his later material. Nice job of cherry picking some of the better 80s songs, and the songs from "Piece By Piece" are different, much better, quieter mixes than those from the album.
One major caveat though, the discs are VERY difficult to remove from the case. I ,sadly, broke disc 2 (which contains his most popular recordings) on my second try at playing it, something that has never happened to me before. Fortunately I still have most of that material on vinyl, but BE CAREFUL !

What an extraordinary bargain: 3 packed CDs of John Martyn's best work for $9. The one, typical caveat at this price point, is a complete lack of liner notes. I saw Martyn live more than 40 years ago, when Solid Air had just come out, and keep coming back to this album. I think you will as well. This compilation flanks Solid Air with work prior to and after this epochal album, and includes alternative takes from those on his albums. The earlier work, with his wife is interesting, but was not a commercial success, and not my favorite and takes up most of disc 1. Disc 2 starts with the Solid Air era, and continues with later material in the same jazz themed work. Buy this now - you will not regret.

This is my intro to John Martyn. Some great stuff hear but also a good bit of filler. A tighter 20 song selection might have been better

This is a great 3 disc compilation at a GREAT price! It covers all of his first 3 decades except the two albums from the early 80's which he recorded on WEA (Glorious Fool and Well Kept Secret) - from 1967's London Conversation to 1990's The Apprentice. As such it's not complete, but it covers a wide range of his evolution as an artist, with several songs from each of the 13 albums included (as well as many selections from the 18 disc The Island Years release from 2013).
Beside the many great original albums Martyn made, there have been several great multi disc compilations, this just being the latest, but it's great even if you own a lot of his others, because of the price, song selection and inclusion of many alternate takes and mixes (15 tracks in all of these). The engineering/sound is fine and the only thing lacking are the musician credits. Highly recommended for the old fans, and if you don't know Martyn all that well this is a great place to dive in.

Almost the Cream of the Crop...?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 23, 2017Verified Purchase
Firstly, I wouldn't fall for the hype that this collection features '58 classic tracks', as there is clearly some filler & erratic track selections here. Although it's interesting to hear an instrumental version of 'Man in the Station', it's no substitute for the real thing, while 'Singin' in the Rain' and 'Over the Rainbow' are not essential in my book. As this collection comes in a chunky case, I was excited by the prospect of an accompanying booklet, but no such luck. There's also much classic John Martyn missing, as this set only feature his Island years. Although that's impressive in itself, it means that some classic recordings don't appear, nor do the more recent impressive albums on indie & his own labels.
Having said all of that, this is still an impressive overview of Martyn's musical development from his early acoustic days when his voice was clear as a bell, to his slurred vocals & rich mix of special effects, including his echoplex work. Many of his classic songs are here (cd1 & cd2 are especially strong), and though no track lengths are given, the songs are mostly in chronological order, so you can watch how his approach changes & develops over time. Similarly, the tracks are taken from the albums in order, so anyone new to Martyn can quickly identify, via the track listings on the case, particular favourite style/albums immediately.
Sound quality is very impressive here, and it's also worth noting that each album runs for a few seconds under 80 minutes, which means that this package gives you almost 4 hours of solid music from this underrated talent, who left us far too soon (as his work on his own label confirms, he was still finding new inspiration up to the time of his death).
I have most of John's work to date, but as other reviewers have noted, this is a convenient way to simply grab a big chunk of his work, rather than sort through individual albums. If you're new to this talented man, this is a good introduction & stepping off point to explore his work further, but don't forget his work on other labels as well...!

A great selection from "Bad Boy John".

A good selection of the work of John Martyn. It begins with his folky days in late 60s London and goes on to the more jazzy material with the fantastic Danny Thompson on double bass. I was a bit wary,at first, about his later stuff but now find it has a smooth, late night vibe and now play it more. Additionally, John's guitar playing is mind blowing at times. Listen and listen again!

2 Stars for the Compilation not the Artist, should have studied the play list better, filled with so called "alternative takes " and "instrumental versions" and why the Beverly Martyn tracks. Buy another Compilation or better still the Albums

Probably the best anthology of Martyn's music!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 17, 2022Verified Purchase
Bought as a present for someone, as I own most of the original albums. After checking carefully through the numerous compilation albums I feel this one is the most complete. The only downside is in the lack of information-no booklet of info. The 3 disc compilation includes all the great studio tracks from his albums, without the number of substitute 'alternative' out-takes that can encroach on the other anthologies. The tracks are also in chronological order, so there's no unexpected jumps in approach and style from one song to another. Unlike a number of anthologies, this one also includes some of the excellent songs from albums recorded with Beverly Martyn. With three discs full of brilliant music, at this price it's a no-brainer.

Very good coverage of John Martin’s musical output with and without his wife , and the various styles he used or created.
A great performer who challenged and entertained us . 3 good recordings that make me want to find more.
