This was a great read except for the yearly calendar and the cycles of time. Those were a bit more than I could keep up with. There is s great poem and really nice stories. You can tell their culture was way different than ours.

Good sources and informative introductions in each story makes this book a useful one. My score is instead about the literary qualities of the myths in themselves. As mentioned by the author there is cultural context that for the original writers were tacit in their society; sadly for us, foreigners, without knowing what originally they meant is hard to make an assessment. It seems that in the original Maya society pride is the worst sin; without being sure of that the first stories seem to be about weak and feble gods that cannot defeat really strong gods without resorting to tricks, lies and cheating. Instead the gods considered guilty of pride look really strong, helpful and noble (in my scale of values, that is) So I get the idea that if the Maya had been Norse they had had Loki as the main god. But... I could be wrong. Also there are understandable contradictions, for example animals are rejected by the gods as people because they cannot praise them in a language, so they decide to create people, but in other story the gods understand the speach of the animals.

Nevertheless the last stories are more entertaining, fantastic, and, curious thing, there is a story about a rabbit that steals from a person in the road a heavy object. If you have read the medieval tale "The Master Thief" (included in the book "Popular tales from the Norse") you will find that the strategy to steal is the same :O

This is a good book that will help you to decide if you want to read more books about Mayan myths. In my case I will pass to another mythologies.

kindle unlimited, think missed getting this one but did run it through ku, is part of a broader set that I have listed that is just mytholgy, plenty of surprising ones covered, not listing all the books as used to because issues with posting, but will list the mythology ones at end which is actually quite a long list just by itself without any of the other captivating history/Matt Clayton ones out

Easy to read!

I love mythology and this one brings Mayan legends to life! The creation stories in particular are beautifully written. I urge readers to not give up with the hard to pronounce names and definitions in the beginning, just slog through and refer back if you find you need it. Most of the names are given in English and the stories are easily understandable without it! But it speaks volumes to the author's attention to detail that he took the time to research the meanings behind it!

Very fun read! It was interesting to learn about some mythology that most are unfamiliar with. Easy to understand and follow for the most part.
