These are surprisingly tasty -- they taste a little like apple-cinnamon flavored shortbread. They are not chewy, but crumbly and while they do require some water to make palatable, they certainly don't actively make you thirsty. The only problem is that it is so good that I, and now my girlfriend too, might keep eating them before they are needed. A great addition to an emergency kit.

After having these for over a year, I have two complaints.
First, the packages are very hard to open without sharp scissors! A fixed blade knife will do it, but you have to be very careful as there is little "dead air" space between the bar and the edge of the vacuum-sealed packaging.
Second, the bars get extremely hard when cold. You basically need to break off parts with a sturdy knife. I wouldn't want to rely on these if stuck in cold weather. However, Powerbars and every other bar I've ever tried does the same thing so I can't complain too much.

I ordered Mayday Emergency 2400 food rations, 24 count (1 case). The item arrived in 2 days as expected for the Amazon Prime shipping, and the outside Amazon box was pristine. The inner case (box shown in picture behind the 3 food bars above) was ripped/ damaged along the side, and had been taped up in a clumsy way. Unfortunately, this may have contributed to the breaking of the mylar-type vacuum seal packaging surrounding some of the individual food blocks/bars. 7 of the 24 bars had oxygen around the food, in that the mylar was not tightly adhering to the food (all air sucked out), like the other non-damaged blocks, but loose. on some of the "loose packs" you could clearly see a very small cut in the mylar-type film, as if a sharp piece of a corner of a nearby bar had poked through. i believe this is more of a manufacturers problem than with the [...] distributor, even if the outer box had been mishandled. just that some rough handling could cause 7 of 24 vacuum seals to break on these bars is cause for concern if you actually plan on having these as emergency rations for the 5 year advertised expiration term. i feel that oxygen in the pack could cause the 5 year storage capacity to decrease, with the food degrading faster. Amazon refunded me a partial amount for the damaged packs. however, since i bought these in bulk for the discounted rate, i'm going to need to buy another bulk pack (i may try Mainstay now- plus they are a different/lemon flavor) to get the same amount of product i planned for, in order to get the better price....so it is a bit irritating. also, who knows how easily the other packs could burst when i place the bars in my emergency packs? not great. i guess i'll need to check every so often, and wrap them carefully or something.

not wanting to waste the opportunity in this review, or the oxygenated food itself, i tried some of the bar in one of the loose packs. there is a faint marking showing where one could cut the bar into 6 pieces, but you need a knife, as it really just looks like one big block. the knife crumbles the bar up somewhat, so you should cut this somewhere you can collect the crumbs when in that emergency situation where every calorie can count. anyway, the stuff is really yummy, like another reviewer said. tastes like very dense pie crust with a hint of apple cinnamon- it could actually be smashed-together pie crust with vitamins, from the flavor and the ingredients! --flour, shortening, sugar? pie crust to me. :). it absolutely did not make me thirsty. however, and unfortunately, it made me more hungry!!!! i wanted to eat more of it. like an appetizer. i will have no problem eating this (starving or otherwise), and i think i can tell my kids it's a cookie, no problem. i just don't know about the weak packaging. THAT part, is indeed problematic.

This product is not gourmet fare, but in a pinch it is delightful.

However, this 20 pack contains 48000 calories; the last box of 20 that I purchase had 72000 calories. That's 2400 ($109) vs 3600 ($118) calorie food bars. You're buying calories in emergency food, so the 2400 calorie food bars are very expensive. The best reason to buy the smaller packs is transportability/convenience. It is a bit easier to pack and carry the 2400 calorie cookie packs than the 3600 ones.

For what these are made for they have a fairly good taste. Each pack contains a block that is intended to be cut into six portions that contain 400 calories each. The instructions indicate that you should eat two portions per day for 800 calories meaning that one bar would last one person for three days. Each bar weighs 1.2 pounds so are more suited for survival than backpacking.

These taste great, and I love the heavy calorie count of each bar. I use them for camping for easy meals, and I'm sure they'd work fantastic in emergency situations.
