SET-UP: Pull out all the 2's of each suit (10 suits, ranging from 2-7 points each, totaling 60 cards), and place these in a pile. These form the discard pile. Shuffle the rest of the cards (another 50), forming the draw deck. Decide if you want to play with special powers or game variants. Shuffle these up and distribute. You are now ready to play! (Easy, quick set-up time...maybe a minute tops). Note: there is also an optional variant where the Mermaids don't have a special ability, but rather are worth more points. In this case, the 2 and 3 are removed from the game, replaced by the 8 and 9. We've played with both, and most of us agree the game is better with the Mermaid's ability (copy any suit previously played in the play area that turn). But to each his/her own - more variety means more replayability!
GAMEPLAY: The game itself plays quickly and simply. You decide whether to draw a card, and, as long as you haven't busted (duplicating a card's suit), then you may continue to 'push your luck' and draw again. (Obviously the first card drawn is pretty much automatic, though I suppose you could choose not to draw...?!) After that, you have to decide if you'd like to bank, or collect, the cards in the play area, of if you'd like to keep going and draw another card. Each card drawn is placed face up next to the draw pile, and each suit has a special ability that it triggers. These abilities are where the strategy comes in. It is subtle, but it is definitely still there. For example, with the Cannon suit, you get to destroy (or blow up, as we say..."I'm gonna blow up your...") the top card of a stack in a player's bank. Which one do you pick, though - do you blow up the 7 Treasure Chest, making them lose the most points, or do you blow up the 5 Mermaid, so they can't Hook (replay a card in your bank) the Mermaid on a future turn? Or let's say you draw a Map suit, allowing you to reveal 3 cards from the (shuffled) discard pile, and pick one of them to play - do you pick the Anchor, safeguarding all previously played cards in the play area this turn; or do you take the Sword, allowing you to steal an opponent's banked card and use its ability; or do you take the Oracle, allowing you to peer into the future (look at the top card of the draw deck)? Decisions decisions! They certainly abound in this game, though they are not brain burning. Even if you make the 'wrong' decision, and in worst case end up busting, hey...your next turn is 30 seconds away...or less!
OVERALL: Overall, I can't say enough about this game. While it's not going to be the meat of any game night, it certainly is an awesome little filler with tons of replayability. The card suits fit the theme incredibly well (Sword, Cannon, Anchor, Treasure Chest, Key, Hook, Mermaid, Oracle, Kraken, and Map)), and the art I think is absolutely perfect for this genre and game level difficulty. (Make sure you don't go with the newest KS version...the artwork is cartoony and childish, if you ask me...the one pictured here is the one to get, imho). So if you're looking for a good filler game that plays quick, has great replayability, can be played with multiple players, and has tons of player interaction, then look no further. This is a great gamen that will satisfy all of these.
- Easy to learn how to play
- Doesn't take long to complete a game
- Options for increasing levels of difficulty
- Developers have mastered the concept of "replayability". Included in the instructions are at least 6 different variations of the game
- Not a blind luck game -- requires strategy
- Multiple winning strategies ranging from very passive to very aggressive
- Cards of of good quality and don't wear out quickly or bend at corners
- Although you have to think during the game, it doesn't require so much thinking you can't socialize or carry on an unrelated conversation
- Very portable (a deck of cards)
- There are two "reminder cards, one for traits and one for suit abilities. I found the print on the abilities memory jogger a little small for old guy eyes, so I have to refer to the rule book.
I would definitely recommend this game, especially for travelers and campers.
