You've got to build a colony from scratch and make it thrive handling production, labor, storage, upkeep, sales, construction, special actions and upgrades in an attempt to score more points than your opponents. It's a game for masterminds and far-sighted calculators whose only fault is to be so epic as to take at least 4 hours to complete from Era 1 to Era 4. Luckily there's a game save feature. :-)
That is just a bare bones overview of The Colonists, and there really is a lot more going on in this game. This is a heavy eurogame that contains a lot of components. The box is big, and in heavy, so you know you're getting your money's worth in terms of cardboard. The game does offer you many choices throughout the game, and you will have to decide where and when to use your resources in order to get to where you want to be with your community. On your turn you may want to build a farm, but you will have to go through another place to get there, and that place may require more resources than you want to spend. Also, if another player is occupying the place you want to use, you have to pay that player a fee (listed on the era card) which can further cause you to consider your turn actions and resource allocations. Because there is a lot going here there is always something to do, always a choice to be made, and I like that a lot.
The game, however, is not really my cup of tea. While broken down, none of the game's mechanics are too difficult to learn and understand, there is a pretty high learning curve when you put it all together- because there is just so much here and so much going on. This will turn off people who you may want to introduce the game to who don't happen to be regular gamers. I recognize that this is a very well designed game system, and there is really some potential for a lot of fun, but for me it gets bogged down in its own euroiness. This is a game for heavy eurogamers, and I am not a heavy eurogamer. If you like games like Agricola and Caverna (which I enjoy, but don't love), you might like this one- just bear in mind its more complicated and time consuming. Which brings me to another point. The game is long- really long if you're playing to the whole four eras. If you have friends that suffer from analysis paralysis, be aware that you will have a ton of downtime in this game. I don't mind long games (my favorite game is Twilight Imperium 3rd edition), but for me this game last longer than the fun it generates. I realize that will not be the case for eurogame lovers, but it is for me.
Again- I believe this is a very well designed game, it's just not for me. With that being said, I'd recommend you try it before you buy it.
