Ok, don't expect to finish any of the Empire Builders games in under 3 hours (we've created some house rules to speed things up, but still, this is a long board game). It's a thinking game, and I find it to be more interesting than a lot of board games out there, which is why it is our go to game for lazy afternoons.
Having said that, our household has created a hack for all of our Rails games that would solves a lot of the other reviewer's problems. We bought a piece of 1/8" thick plexiglass (cut to the size of the board, which is standard for all of our versions so far) and a pack of dry-erase markers to use instead of drawing rails directly on the board- it's easier and keeps the playing surface pristine.

I played these games as a teenager - EuroRails, Australian Rails, Iron Dragon.

My wife had never played these, so I introduced her to EuroRails - and now we have crayon game cravings. She loves Empire Builder particularly - it has a great balance of luck and strategy without making a specific play method most optimal. This is unlike EuroRails, which has a few play moves that are effectively mandatory - and if you don't do them (or don't do them at the right time) you effectively cannot win.

We play two-player, two-players -- we both run two train lines independent of each other. Makes for a longer, and more interesting, game. Always great fun, and a good way to spend a cold, or very warm, evening.

This game is really alot of fun! Our little group when playing this game ranges from 33 to 15. We all have alot of fun with this game. We have played it so much, the puzzle board is starting to get worn down and the crayons are almost done. Everyone in the family will have fun with this game!

Great game. Think ticket to ride on steroids + coloring. Rules are pretty simple (I would argue monopoly is more complex). Great for teaching cost-to-benefit analysis skills. I would recommend implementing a loan system with the bank/other players. Sometimes a player may find themselves trapped and unable to complete any loads (this is usually at the very start of the game). I have found that a simple 1:2 ratio works fairly well (for every $1 you borrow you must pay back $2), requiring payback as soon as money is acquired. Another solution is to request help from other players, think cutting a business deal. Another player may offer a better loan rate than the bank or could include some kind of deferred payment. They could also negotiate some kind of future benefit like using the borrowing players track to gain access to a city they've been blocked out of.

Cons: current version of the game replaces the plastic tokens with cardboard punch outs (includes a note apologizing for the downgraded tokens), stock crayons aren't of the highest quality.
Pros: everything else.

The lack of plastic chips is a little disappointing, but doesn't take away from the game at all. I recommend also picking up an 8 pack of the crayola crayons to go with the game. They seem to work better and don't break as easily.

This is our 5th purchase of this game. Every one has had differences. This one the chips were cardboard not as nice as game purchased about year before which were small pokerchips with loads printed onthem. Best so far! We use glass cover 1/4" and dry erase markers because we play them so much.

Opened the box to find a note from Mayfair apologizing that this copy uses die cut punch out chits instead of the plastic poker chips previous used. My annoyance changed to disappointment when I discovered the poorly printed, off center chits included in the box. I expected quality and ended up with a drastically inferior product. The game is fun, I've played it dozens of times using friends' copies. I suggested to my wife that we should get our own since the quality is great and it isn't terribly expensive. Well don't I just look like a fool.

This game is fun, so I gave it to my niece for a Christmas present, but I think perhaps I should have gotten the somewhat simpler (yet similar) "Ticket to Ride"; but I think she eventually figured it out...

This edition makes major improvements to the aesthetics, which is sorely needed. The load chips are in color(!), color coded, and have the names of the loads printed on them. The load cards are colorful, and also have the name of the load. They got rid of the brown crayon...no more "streaks" on the board. They replaced it with orange. The crayons are bigger; the game should last longer. They also re wrote the rulebook. They made only one change: loans are now considered a variation. They clarified some others. On the board some rivers have been altered slightly so it's plain if you needed to pay to cross or not.
