Amazon.com Review

K.A. Applegate, author of the wildly popular Animorphs books, begins a brand new series with a bang. In the gripping Mayflower Project, the first of the Remnants series, she establishes several diverse characters and the tensions and alliances between them and sets them on their way into the wild blue yonder. Hip lingo, faintly futuristic technologies, and kid-next-door characterizations draw readers in--the plot hooks 'em for good.

The cast of characters? A 14-year-old technogeek who calls himself Jobs after computer king Steve Jobs; the angry, aggressive son of America's African American woman president; a dreamy, psychic boy, adopted as a toddler from an orphanage in Chechnya; and a driven, strikingly beautiful, yet horribly disfigured girl who calls herself 2Face. The year is 2011 and these four, along with 76 others, are destined to meet on a hastily jerry-rigged shuttle whose sole aim is to leave Earth before the giant asteroid that is hurtling through space blows the planet to smithereens. Amid confusion, skepticism, and sheer panic as the world comes to terms with its impending, inevitable doom, the chosen few are whisked to Cape Canaveral to board a pitifully small, shabby steel tube NASA has optimistically named the Mayflower. They leave everything behind, including any hope of returning; vast, endless space is the only certainty in their future.

Applegate's hungry Animorphs fans, perhaps a little older now, will be thrilled with her latest series, knowing the 80 earth escapees have many, many riveting adventures ahead of them. After all, the sky's the limit. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

My son recently wrote the following mini-review:
Remnants is the new series Animorphs' creator K.A. Applegate is working on. The year is 2011. A 76-mile-long asteroid is about to hit high-tech Earth. A "chip" of the asteroid strikes San Francisco, killing people by the thousands and shocking the many who were unaware that the world -- the population of people, plants, animals, insects, everything -- was doomed to devastation. Only eighty people can fit in the Mayflower, a ship built to escape Earth and put the passengers in hibernation. The Mayflower launches with zero days until impact of the asteroid, so beginning the long journey to find another place to colonize.

K.A. Applegate has definetly done it again!
Jobs is normal, well,he's a techno-geek but he is still normal,he's just a regular 14 year-old boy living in califorinia in the year 2011.So one day while he is 'driving' his car,he hears a phrase from a news report on the screen in his car, something about earth being imperiled,so he replays the story,It's about a recently discovered asteroid, that will collide with earth in 5 days. It's 76-miles long, the one that killed the dinosaurs was what 10-miles long?Scientists say that the planet could litterlally break in two.Mankind is about to become extinct.Well,wait,this-it just can't be the end of everything right? Then Jobs here's About the escape,It's called the Mayflower Project, NASA is loading up and old space shuttle and adding some new,high-tech,and untested hibernation equiptment, and a new invention called solar-sails.The Plan is to put people in hibernation, blast them into space, have them sail around the sun a couple hundred-years and hope eventually they land, defrost them and them have them try to colonize and repopulate the human speicies where ever they land....But,the shuttle only has room for 80 passengers,Who will escape the Rock?
Ah,well,now my opinion:
Okay I'll be honest,I was like almost all of K.A.'s other fans,I just finished her other series Animorphs and was dying for something great to replace Animorphs,so I decided to try Remnants...I read it and all at once I was amazed, shocked, intriged, and kinda depressed...To me it was all theese people and all of them had something to be depressed about, and then there was the rock and well, when I finished it I decided I would never read it again, and I thought K.A. had completely lost her talent, especially after the last Animorph book!

The year is 2011, and the revelation that no one believed is about to come true: Earth is going to be destroyed. No one wants to believe this knowledge. But it becomes very clear to all of humanity, and now it's widely known : Earth will never survive the asteroid that will ultimately collide with the planet, blowing everything apart and killing billions of lives, destroying every last trace of life on Earth. Jobs, a fourteen year old American who never believed the rumor just like everyone else,is one of the lucky eighty Earth escapees who will board on a primitive space shuttle called the Mayflower, a shuttle that will leave Earth before the impact so that humanity can continue. Together with his friend Mo' Steel and others, their journey begins - with light years ahead of them to soar into, and with the fleeting hope that they can continue the life -- and existence -- of the human race. But that will take light years, and the journey must begin. And Jobs's life is no longer the same. With the departure of Animorphs in May 2001, The Mayflower Project is the beginning of a dark new series that begins with a promise that is sure to replace the hearts of Animorphs fans everywhere. Though nothing can replace Animorphs, Remnants is a breathtaking new sci-fi series from the best-selling author K.A. Applegate that will always have surprises at every thrillingly dark new turn.
