Situation: DIY'er now, but did shop auto repair for years, know my way around a wrench. Facing seized muffler flange, some damage to threads. Wanted to salvage and rethread. Tried Stringer metric stud remover based on Amazon review. Did not engage stud for removal. My sense is the product would be fine on studs in good condition. Description could have been more specific (but that's the subject of another review). Had Mayhew for back-up. The product description clearly stated the stud remover would work on studs in all condition and boy did it! As advertised. Use in tandem with impact gun (not for hand use), and it will make your life easier. I was most impressed as it did the job with no added heat (heat will damage tool), usually a must ingredient for a successful stud removal recipe. I would recommend this highly for stud removal as the gradual tightening action is less destructive than the removers that require a hammer and if not used properly will just chew up a stud. I don't know if there is a remover that's universally successful in every situation, since positioning outside of an ideal "bench" situation can render any stud remover useless. Know your situation and it's limitations. But if you look at the picture and feel you can get it in position for your job, it will kick ass. Keep in mind when you get it, it will be bigger than you might think. Good tool.

I just used this the other day replacing exhaust manifolds on a Powerstroke that were more rust than everything else put together. Couldn't even get a hammered-on undersized socket to not round the bolt heads, so I went full retard, and just cut all the bolt heads off. This thing got out 15 of the 16 bolts, the one it didn't get was so rust that by the time the jaws got a grip, there was only maybe 1/4" diameter left, and it had trouble getting enough grab.

If you've got the protruding fastener and the room needed to use one of these, it's the easiest I've ever used, it's even relatively easy to remove the bolt from it compared to fluted socket extractors. I used it with a 3/8" IR impact gun, and also with a long ratchet. I found the best method to be just snugging the collar, then hitting it hard with the impact, and letting the "snatch" when the jaws fully clamped break the bolts loose. I might start cutting heads off suspect fasteners more often, just so I don't have to deal with bolts that break off flush!

I ordered the Mayhew (instead of the less expensive one) because of availability) extractor as i was desparate. Leaving on Saturday and on Tuesday the exhaust bolt was still not out (snapped off on Sunday). After 10 minutes with this tool (mostly looking for the right very large wrenches) the stud was out. Thanks for a quality product. For my peace of mind, worth every penny.

I've used this twice and it works flawlessly. You know that sick feeling you get when you bust off a bolt ? I'm sure you do if you're reading this...

This tool has saved me several times and I can't recommend it enough.

This tool is as important as having a screwdriver in your tool box, you will use it !

It works really well if you have the space to use it.
I could not get it onto the partial studs protruding out of the exhaust manifold. After cutting them off and removing the manifold I had more access to the studs and it removed them easily. It is 3 inches long and almost 2 inches wide, if the area you have to attach it to your stud is close this will not work but if you have room it works pretty good. In the picture attached, after removing the manifold I was able to extract 8 studs and only broke one using this tool.

I would have given it 5 stars, but it's just too bulky to use in cramped areas.

I purchased this specifically to remove an stubborn exhaust stud in my motorcycle. As others have noted, it's large size really limits where it can be used. I my case, it was much too large in diameter to latch onto the exhaust stud- the cylinder cooling fins were in the way (honestly, it was not even close). This stud extractor is a larger than a standard drill chuck.

I did however 'test' the extractor on a bolt I had put in my vise- it seems like it would work fine under different circumstances. Overall, it seems quite heavy-duty and well made. It just wasn't usable for my purpose- not really the tools fault as I was aware of the size (I was desperate though, so I went for it!). Perhaps it will come in handy another time.

This would work pretty good except the tip area is the size of a drill chuck. Almost always a broken stud is in some hard to get to tight area and does not allow room for this tool to slide over it. The broken stud would also have to be pretty long. I guess you can also use it to install new studs but it seems there are better methods than this which do not risk damaging the threads on the new bolt.

This worked great. Before using this I would recommend dripping some heavy oil inside of it. The threads inside of mine felt very rough and couldn't be turned by hand. I used this to remove some stainless exhaust studs on a Toyota Tacoma with stainless TRD exhaust. Two of the three bolts came out fine with this tool. The other stud broke once when removing the nut then a second time when using the stud extractor(not the tools fault).I bought the Mayhew tool knowing some of their tools are made in the USA. This one was not, mine was labeled made in Malaysia. I think for the price/country of origin it may have been better to buy the Titan Stud extractor(probably not made in the us). The only stud extractor I found in this style/made in the USA was made by Snap-On and was over 250$.
