We have only tried one recipe, and since it's from the library we won't try more. In summary, I don't like this book bc in my opinion the recipes aren't all that healthy, don't teach good cooking skills, and the one we tried wasn't all that easy to follow for my 7 year old, who does cook already. There are much better kids' cookbooks on amazon, I'd skip this one, especially if you're looking for something super healthy.

Not Very Healthy -- There's a lot of refined grains and reliance on "fat free" ingredients to make a recipe healthy. Muffins are made with white flour (some recipes do use whole wheat). Instead of adding sugar, they add honey -- it's still sugar to your body. To be fair, it's on the lower side, but just not notably healthier than other kids' cookbooks. This bears the "Mayo Clinic" name on it. It does say "white or whole wheat" for tortillas in one recipe, pasta in the other, but then the pictures all show that the Mayo Clinic used, yes, you guessed it, white flour tortillas and I'm pretty sure that's white flour pasta. One of the tortilla recipes does use whole wheat, the other does not, the tuna flippers say whole wheat buns but that's a white bun in the picture. I'm picky, but I only feed my kids whole wheat and they loved pointing out to me that this healthy cookbook had pictures with the white flour ingredients. Thanks, Mayo.

The recipes read like a '90s diet book, recommending fat free ingredients to make it "healthy". There is a lot of science these days debunking that, especially when it comes to kids who absolutely need some fat for development. To be fair, they put fat on their food pyramid at the front. But the recipes call for fat free yogurt, margarine instead of butter, egg substitute, fat free cheese.

Some of the recipes use artificial sweetener. Unless the book is especially for weight loss for children I don't think that children should eat artificial anything. I really didn't appreciate that nothing about artificial sweeteners was mentioned in the description.

This is an excellent cookbook for children. The recipes are easy for young cooks to follow and of course, being published by the Mayo Clinic, the recipes are nutritious; the pictures of featured recipes are conducive for kids to try the recipes. I would recommend this book to parents and grandparents; you'll have a fun time making meals.

Appealing, interesting recipes with great pictures. A little young for my mature 9 year old but still eager to cook!

I purchased this book in good faith because of the Mayo Clinic reputation. It was intended as a "stocking stuffer" for a 7-year old great nephew who was interested in learning new skills in the kitchen. After reviewing it, I decided not to give the gift. I disliked that this cookbook recommended the use of nonfat products in many of their recipes. Studies have shown that this is not good advice, especially for children, that healthy fats are an integral part of a healthy diet. In fact, the fattest generation of Americans were the outcome of the no fat diet craze. I was very disappointed.
