Not Very Healthy -- There's a lot of refined grains and reliance on "fat free" ingredients to make a recipe healthy. Muffins are made with white flour (some recipes do use whole wheat). Instead of adding sugar, they add honey -- it's still sugar to your body. To be fair, it's on the lower side, but just not notably healthier than other kids' cookbooks. This bears the "Mayo Clinic" name on it. It does say "white or whole wheat" for tortillas in one recipe, pasta in the other, but then the pictures all show that the Mayo Clinic used, yes, you guessed it, white flour tortillas and I'm pretty sure that's white flour pasta. One of the tortilla recipes does use whole wheat, the other does not, the tuna flippers say whole wheat buns but that's a white bun in the picture. I'm picky, but I only feed my kids whole wheat and they loved pointing out to me that this healthy cookbook had pictures with the white flour ingredients. Thanks, Mayo.
The recipes read like a '90s diet book, recommending fat free ingredients to make it "healthy". There is a lot of science these days debunking that, especially when it comes to kids who absolutely need some fat for development. To be fair, they put fat on their food pyramid at the front. But the recipes call for fat free yogurt, margarine instead of butter, egg substitute, fat free cheese.Read more ›
