I like the series. I watch for free on Prime before. Somehow now I had to either rent or buy, My kid wanted to see it after she saw the trailer, I had to buy all 3 about a week apart. this became our weekend movie night feature.

The movie I will be reviewing is The Maze Runner. It is based on a book series by James Dashner. It’s about a boy named Thomas who, with no memory, finds himself in the center of a maze with other boys. He is very curious about the maze and, ignoring the other’s warnings about death traps and grievers, gets trapped inside for the night but makes it out alive. A girl named Teresa, who seems to know Thomas, is sent into the maze with the information that she is the last one who will be sent into the maze. After that he joins a group of runners, explores the maze, and finds a way out. Because of his actions, the people controlling the maze don’t close the gates and there is a mass killing by the grievers. Then they leave and seem to be rescued, but the mastermind behind it all, Ava Paige, says that they are only entering phase two.

The actors give a very believable performance. They are very good with their emotions and that brings a realism to the story. Thomas is reckless but he does seem to be thinking the clearest. Teresa is the only girl in the maze but she is pretty much just terrified for the whole thing. Minho is a very supportive character and he brings positivity. Alby and Newt are both good leaders and Alby is sensible while Newt is willing to be more flexible. Gally, while he is over dramatic at times, is the only realistic character who is thinking about more than just getting out. Ava Paige, the villain, doesn’t get much screen time, but she seems like she will be a force to be reckoned with. All the characters were developed nicely and you knew enough about the ones you needed to.

The movie was very entertaining. There was an energy and liveliness to it that helped balance the scary parts. The plot was predictable, but in an enjoyable way so you aren’t mad at it. The settings were cool and pretty gorgeous. The plot doesn’t give everything away in the first movie so you want to watch the next one. The struggles seem very realistic even though you know that they are fake. This movie does a great job of drawing you into the story so you aren’t just watching it, you almost feel like you are there.

And now for my favorite part! I wanted to start by saying that Teresa seems pointless to the story. I get that there has to be romantic tension, but couldn’t they have given her an actual purpose? The movie as a whole has a fast pace and it’s like everything happens in five days. (maybe it did?) Thomas is put on a pedestal which I get that he is the main character but he could have been slightly more normal. Because of his amazingness everyone else seems stupid. In three years they don’t really know how to take care of themselves and they rely on the elevator which led to one of the stupid plot points of “oh no it stopped bringing stuff!” The grievers were super deadly until they were unimportant to the story and they were the easiest things to destroy. The movie’s climax is literally just killing the characters who have any sense.

Final thoughts: it was a pretty good movie. I think I could watch it like one more time and then I would have to step away for a year. The way they blended a futuristic but still in the now feel is incredible because it gives you a “this could happen even though I know it won’t” feel. The characters were well done. I was rooting for all of them to die but this is a trilogy so maybe at the end? It was nice that there wasn’t romance in this movie more like companionship. I think the way you feel about this movie will change depending on your age and how you handle violence. If you don’t like violence then this movie isn’t for you. I would rate this movie three and a half stars.
