I returned it because essentially, as a first-time Mazzer buyer, I had not yet been educated on some fundamental issues. So, for other newbies, here's the mistake I made that you shouldn't make. I thought that the "doser" would mean that as a home user I could program the dose and have the machine grind just that...easy peasy. Boy was I wrong. The "doser" is actually a container of little wedge-shaped openings. For it to dose coffee as a barista would do it, in convenient shots, you have to grind a LOT of coffee and fill up most of the wedge-shaped openings.
For home use, it was a major pain in the neck. Your options include grinding a ton of coffee so the doser is full, but unless you have 20 of your closest friends over for espresso, that's nuts as your coffee will just get stale in there, defeating the purpose of grinding it yourself! The other option is to grind a small amount of coffee (maybe even measure out what you need as some suggest) and then keep pulling the lever like a gambling addict at a slot machine until you fill up your portafilter. And then when you're done making your coffee, time to open up the doser and use the little brush to clean out all the stray coffee grinds.
There are people who don't mind doing that, and more power to them. But for me, it was a big hassle, and really just not for me. So I found the perfect solution in The Mazzer Mini Electronic Grinder Type B. It was a good bit more expensive (not putting price here as it will change anyway, but you can Google it). The Type B is "doserless" but despite the name does allow you to very conveniently press a button and get a defined dose (which you set with a screw) of one or two cups worth. The doserless version is super super easy to clean, in fact I don't clean at all as the coffee just slides through the funnel. At the time of this writing the Type B was not available on Amazon.
There is also a Mazzer Mini Electronic Grinder Type A, very similar to the B I described above except that the controls are on the top. I liked the B more both for looks and functionality, as I prefer to tap to start with the portafilter than hold the portafilter with one hand and tap a button on top with the other. The A also has a little coiled cord which attaches the lid of the cone onto the top, which strikes me as annoying in home use. (Review edited one year after purchase on Feb. 1, 2015 to say that my doserless electronic Type B has held up with no issues, and I still love it.)
Back to this model. A few enterprising people have modified this to make it doserless, essentially getting the convenience for home use of the doserless model for the price of this one. If you like tinkering, might be for you, but once I'm spending upwards of $600 I'm good with spending a little more to get exactly what I want.
