More accurately, I don't care for McAfee's policies of forcing me to register and, with an earlier version, putting me into an auto-renew program which led to unexpected credit card charges.
In terms of actually detecting viruses, McAfee did no better than Norton, Microsoft Essentials or several other commercial or free anti-virus programs. My own personal favorite is BitDefender.
McAfee seems to take a toll on system resources. Not as bad as Norton, but more than BitDefender and Microsoft.
The worst part of McAfee are the annoying and seemingly endless stream of pop-ups. Every event, no matter how minor seems to spawn one or more pop-ups. It left me with the feeling that McAfee wants to convince users that it is working really hard instead of doing its thing silently in the background.
And when it comes to renewal reminders, McAfee nags, nags, nags, nags and nags to the point where I wouldn't renew simply out of spite for being nagged at so much.
Overall, McAfee works. But I prefer BitDefender.
My main complaint is the back up warning. You get a couple gigs free online back up with their Total Protection product. I have WAY more than that on my computer so I have a separate drive that I use for backing up my computer. Unfortunately, every time I reboot my computer I get a warning flashing at the bottom that I need to complete the set up for the online backup. I have tried to check their help section for ways to turn this off but that is a joke too! It comes up in a small box with no way to maximize and reading it is next to impossible. There is no box in the right hand corner to enlarge the screen, clicking on the icon in the tool bar at the bottom does not give an option either so I finally gave up.
I would have given it 5 stars but the fact that I can not use their help to fix the irritating warning message knocks a few starts off. I'll check their online help section but I wish I could use the built in help section instead.
I updated McAfee 2010 with McAfee Total Protection 2011 a few weeks ago. It shut down my internet access and LAN. My tech support guy initially thought I had a virus, but after two days of trouble-shooting he found that it was a bad update from the McAfee software. It had loaded a bunch of bogus services in the start-up. It cost me $120 to have the computer repaired. My tech guy recommends Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free, along with running MalwareBytes and Super Anti-Spyware once a week, also free. He said he's run into this same situation with other clients loading McAfee 2011. So far these free services are working fine. Maybe it was a fluke, but I wasn't willing to risk trying to re-load McAfee. As a small business owner, I can't afford to have my computer out of commission. I will not use McAfee again.
BTW, purchased another brand of security protection and it downloaded in 10 minutes and was good to go.
