Great natural dye option

I used these powdered dyes to make homemade play dough for the kids. Wanted inexpensive colors that did not contain artificial dyes and harmful chemicals, and these were perfect! A little goes a long way and they mix together great! Was able to get very vibrant colors using just 1/4 -1/2 tsp each. It comes with 3 colors and they even include the recipe and ratios to mix for other color options.

**Buttercream Icing**
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
2 tablespoons milk
McCormick Natural Food Color
1) Cream room temperature butter with a hand mixer, the paddle attachment of a stand mixer, or a wooden spoon until smooth and fluffy.
2) Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar until fully incorporated.
3) Beat in vanilla extract.
4) Pour in milk and beat for an additional 3-4 minutes.
5) Add food color, if using, and beat for thirty seconds until smooth. See box and add color as directed for frosting.

YAY! This coloring is amazing. My son can't have artificial dyes so we have tried many natural color options over the years. THIS is our favorite by far. The powder colors blend in great and on first try we mixed green just as the box instructed and it turned out great!! With other brands the colors were very light with recommended amount and we would have to use a lot. We had perfect green icing the first try and my son was thrilled! I have already order another box because we have not seen this locally and I want to be sure we have more. I will post the buttercream icing recipe we use below. AWESOME!! Colors were vibrant and didn't affect the taste. I will never go back to artificial food color. One note- this is a powder and even a small amount will dry out frosting so I would suggest adding more milk or whatever liquid you use in your frosting recipe, I didn't expect this so I had a little trouble frosting and piping. Next time I will anticipate this texture adjustment.

I have tried several natural food colors over the years. This is my favorite! Pros: Resealable package, powder formula won't dilute frosting, nice colors, more affordable than other options, doesn't taste funny. Cons: I could do without the dextrose and glucose solids, but fine for what it is. (It is going in a ton of sugar after all.) The colors are less vibrant than artificial colors which is to be expected. My son has a sensitivity to artificial colors so we avoid them as a family. All of my children were thrilled with the way this frosting came out. Here's a picture of my attempt at rainbow/unicorn cupcakes using the three colors. (India tree are the sprinkles.) I haven't tried mixing for secondary colors yet. I plan on repurchasing.

Wonderful to find food colours that you can use with confidence knowing that they are not harmful. We decorated heart shaped cookies for Valentines Day and the colours turned out very nicely. I also used the blue (not pictured here) which was simply a true blue. They are powdered so don’t thin the icing.
