Never used black food colouring before, I was surprised that this one actually has a pretty metallic shine to it. One teaspoon or so will only tint frosting grey so I used a LOT of the bottle on these cakes - for a big batch of 24 cupcakes I’ve probably used most of the bottle - but I’m pretty happy because they look super cool and I dont need to make black frosting often. I’d recommend this if you just want to do a one-off

I bought this for my wife because she makes a lot of red velvet cake however when she used it, the same amount as being used with the smaller expensive bottles, the cake batter came out pink. She makes her batter from scratch and the color did not come out as rich and red as it did using the smaller bottles. Im not sure what the problem was.

I would have spent almost the cost of this huge bottle for just two 1 ounce bottles (which is what my red velvet cake recipe calls for). I make red velvet cake almost every year at Christmas time and when you go out to the brick and mortar stores the day after Thanksgiving, you'll be lucky to find a bottle or 2 plus as I said it is very expensive. I purchased this huge bottle that will last me probably several years and I used it this year to make a beautiful red velvet cake for my family. Love it!

Who knew red food dye could be used for survival equipment and not just fun!!!

I bought this to test out my travel berkey water filter (with the two black elements) and boy am I glad I did! I was testing the water filter just using sink water so no risk of danger, but when I checked for proper filtration with this food dye I found that the filters were not functioning properly and all the food dye made it through to the bottom chamber! After a bit of examination I found that the threads on the plastic wing nut appeared to be slightly stripped and that filter was not being sealed as tightly as the other. I called their customer service and with my explanation they sent me a replacement set of wing nuts and seals. Then I ran the test again with the red food dye and none visibly made it through the filters! Also had some fun in the process (accidentally got some red food dye on my fingers and didn't realize it until it was on several things around the house...oops! Pay attention people lol).

It’s doesn't work well for very black, from scratch, frosting. It makes it more of a charcoal color. It does turn canned frosting very black but only if you use a chocolate base. Otherwise it’s a charcoal color again.

Yep, this is definitely black. Very, very black. And the bottles are custom designed to capture that black as you pour and deliver it back up the side of the bottle to your fingers. Seriously, I never could figure out how to pour a few drops without staining my hands for the next 2 days. If you use this stuff, do it over the sink. Maybe even outside. It will get EVERYWHERE.

That said, it definitely does the job.
