I did extensive research before purchasing and had to justify to myself buying this over a MC1275 or the apparently analogous Wagner 915. which is less than half the price ($84). Even for those units there are few good operating videos on YT. The highly viewed video there by ToolSelect wasn't that enthused about the lower unit. Some car enthusiasts or wealthy people seem to also gush for the more industrial units from other brands that go for around $2000, which would be way out of my budget. I looked at those units and the main differences was that they had higher max pressure (4-6 bar) or temp, continuous water filling (you can fill it will it's operating) and some have detergent dispensers. The lower units seem to be only 2 bar so, I thought this unit that went to 4 bar for only a fraction of the price should be great value.
When I pulled this unit out of the box, the manual immediately lowered my enthusiasm. If you go to the McCulloch site or this Amazon site, "4 bar" is plastered everywhere. This unit never hits 4 bar when you are using it and even the manual says regular operating pressure is around 2 bar. When you turn on the unit and let it heat it hits the 4 bar max on the gauge, but then it drops to 2-3 bar when you start using it. I went back to those ads for the $2k units and they also use the max values and not operating values so the entire industry may be deceptive on that point. At least this unit has a gauge to tell you the pressure.
So I've used this around the house and used most of the attachments. I like how everything snaps together and the pressure is decent. Maybe it would be even better with an operating pressure of 4 bar. You get 2 bags of either plastic or metal brushes that have to be attached to a hex connector and that is a little difficult to put on. This is the only non-snap on part. You have use muscle while attempting not to bend the metallic brush hairs. The unit's all plastic, but it looks and feels durable. The hole to fill water with is at the bottom of a bowl-shaped area which acts like a funnel and must be filled with patience. Mopping the floor and removing soap scum with the squeegee is fairly easy. You will have to have a bring a towel with you when you clean windows outside the bathroom because steam and cool surfaces results in condensation and water drippage. This doesn't seem to be a bad as the ToolSelect video with the lower model. You'll have to be careful with the squeegee attachment though as it has two sides --a squeegee side and a side with bristles. Steam only comes out of the bristle side, and if you flip the attachment to squeegee so that that side is facing down and then press the trigger, steam shoots out the top. Some hot water speckles shoot in your face. Just be lazy and don't remove and reattach it reversed, but instead just turn handle. There's also some water that shoots out right when you press the trigger, which the manual says occurs when it's overfilled, but it seems to happen even when it's not.
For the jobs that this is used for, you have to ask yourself if it is worth it to fill it, wait 12-15 minutes to heat it up and then wait 30 minutes before putting it away when done when you are doing a small job like just cleaning the sink or one window. Maybe grabbing a bottle of Windex and some paper towels would be just as effective and would take only a minute. There are some jobs like scrubbing, grout cleaning and grease removal that do require more muscle power and maybe some cleaners so in those situations, the unit may only make cleaning a little easier. Some situations like hardened grease or burnt stuck on foods that's been there for months also require a presoak. There was one oven with 1/8 to 1/16 inch layer of grease and I wasn't able to scrape it off. Maybe my room was too cold and the nozzle was on the attachment was too far from the surface to heat it enough to scrape it off. I would have liked also a narrow scraper in addition to the wide one. And in greasy and oily situations you do need some detergent to help.
The bottom line here is that this is not the end all and be all for cleaning equipment. My babushka of a grandma said that it was a toy, and that you get so much cleaning supplies for $200 at Costco or Sams. :/ But of course she was from the generation when they walked to school uphill both ways in the snow. It really isn't a toy as you shouldn't let kids play with this. If you open the pressure cap before the unit has cooled down it will blow hot steam on your hands and face and will injury you.
The one other use no one else has mentioned is that you can you this as a clothes steamer. For this unit you can use tap water, though they would like for you to use distilled to avoid calcium deposits. Cleaning shouldn't be bad with acetic acid aka vinegar though a few drops of muriatic acid (HCl) bought at Home Depot for cleaning toilets, pools and etching concrete is better because calcium acetate's solubility is lower in higher temps.
I recently cleaned the interior of a very dirty Ford Escape. Dirt, grime, dust... It was bad. The MC1385 tore thru it, sanitizing everything and getting rid of the awful odors. It left the interior clean and fresh smelling. Best of all, using steam verses chemicals won't leave you with that nasty odor that cleaners leave behind, which just mask the smells and don't really get rid of them. See pics below.
If you're on the fence about the price, spend the money and get something that is well made and has attachments for just about anything you need to clean. It's a purchase you won't regret, making cleaning easier and even a bit fun, if there is such a thing.
The dislikes: as much as I love this, there are a few things that bug me, but I've found a workaround:
Attachments: a bag comes with its, and there are several small attachments that can easily get lost. Buy one of those clear plastic zip storage bags, and you will keep everything together. The standard bag is a reusable shopping style bag that does closes with a tiny piece of Velcro.
Warm up: this takes about 15 minutes. Ive found to let the steam warm, squeeze the trigger a few time to get the water running thru the machine, and then let the steam build up for about five minute. Then, go at it. To make life easier, use a plastic funnel to fill the tank, it's almost impossible to fill using the little cup that comes with it.
These are just little quirks of mine, certainty not reasons to avoid buying. More like suggestions for making this machine even better. Get over the price and buy something you will find a million uses for, and isn't some under powered "puff and clean" machine like some that you see listed. You won't regret the investment. I love this machine and I know it has saved me a ton of time, effort, and aggravation. I don't know how I went without it.
